There is nothing more humbling than walking into a star-studded celebrity event not with the biggest luminary in the room…but behind them. Not only does no one have the least bit of interest in you, but you feel compelled to dive out of the way of the cameras, lest some paparazzi photo turn up tagged “Legendary singer Gloria Estefan, husband Emilio Estefan, and a Macy Gray look-alike.”

Fortunately, that was the only slightly uncomfortable moment at last night’s party at Miami Beach’s retro-cool Eden Roc hotel to honor my co-worker and Pulitzer Prize-winner Liz Balmaseda and her new novel “Sweet Mary.” The party, given by the Estefans, was a Who’s Who of Miami high rollers – TV host Cristina Saralegui, actor Andy Garcia, “Scarface” actor Steven Bauer and others.

I also heard that Daisy Duchens, runner-up for the first season of Bravo’s hairdressing competition “Shear Genius,” was there, but I didn’t see her. Apparently, she did Liz’s hair, in gorgeous cascades of shiny natural curls. But her hair wasn’t as bright as her gracious smile, watching her friends both famous and every day.

I didn’t get to meet any of the celebrities – Liz had offered to introduce me to Gloria but I didn’t want to intrude. We did get within about 10 feet of Andy Garcia, who just looks so handsome and self-assured, like even if you didn’t know who he was, you’d think “That guy muse be somebody.” And it was interesting to watch how the cameras didn’t seem to bother them – there were 10 flash-bearing people crushed around the bar watching Bauer, Garcia and Liz greet each other, and they went on about their business. I don’t know if I could. But I guess part of celebrity is grace under pressure, right?
