Saying thanks to one’s ancestors for one’s quality of life is the cornerstone of the Bon Festival held every August at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach.

The festival has been celebrated in Japan for more than 500 years. This is the 33rd year it’s been celebrated at Morikami.

The evening features taiko drum performances, traditional Japanese folk dancing and a street fair with games, American and Asian food and vendor booths. Guests can buy hand-crafted lanterns and write a special message to passed loved ones, which are lit and floated on Morikami Pond. A limited number of lanterns are available for $10 each, sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

The highlight of the evening begins at sunset when the pond transformed into a tranquil sea of lighted lanterns that, in keeping with Japanese custom, guide the departure of ancestors’ souls who have come for a brief visit among the living.

A special fireworks display completes the enchanting evening.
