As the new artistic director of the Caldwell Theatre, Clive Cholerton wants to stage shows that are different, outside the box and that get theatergoers buzzing.

You could say Vices: A Love Story, snugly fits into those categories. The world-premiere musical, created by Ilene Reid and Michael Heitzman, explores relationships through song and dance. There are only a few lines of spoken dialogue. Instead, all of the emotion is expressed by dancing to a variety of styles of music, including rock, jazz, opera and R&B. You’ll see everything from modern ballet to ballroom to contemporary to modern tap.

And the actors just happen to be drop-dead gorgeous, which doesn’t hurt.

Think So You Think You Can Dance: The Musical Theater Edition.

“It’s an amalgamation of dance and song,” Cholerton says. “We’re trying to create a new form of musical theater. Any time I can ever combine full energy and make it as emotional as I can and inject as much humor as possible, that’s what I’m about as an artist.”

Vices is choreographed by AC Cuilla, the Emmy-winning (Stars on Ice) and Tony nominated (Footloose) choreographer and directed by Cholerton.
