BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS
: The Lake Worth Playhouse presents Neil Simon’s award-winning comedy-drama. Set in the summer of 1937, in post-Depression, pre-war-era Brooklyn, the story draws on Simon’s own experiences growing up in a lower-middle-class family. Eugene stands in for the author as the play’s narrator, a young boy dealing with his own burgeoning sexual awareness while dreaming of playing baseball for his beloved New York Yankees. The show runs today through Dec. 13 at the Playhouse, 713 Lake Ave. in downtown Lake Worth. Tickets: $25-29. (561) 586-6410.

A DOLL’S HOUSE: While its view of women and the marriage dynamic is likely to seem quaint, if not antiquated, Palm Beach Drama Works demonstrates that Henrik Ibsen’s classic play is still plenty stageworthy. True, housewife Nora Helmer’s dilemma and eventual door-slamming escape no longer causes the shock and outrage they did to 1879 Norwegian theatergoers. But the domestic drama, and melodrama, still has enough spark. — Hap Erstein.

Through Nov. 29, Palm Beach Dramaworks, 322 Banyan Blvd., West Palm Beach. (561) 514-4042.

TWO JEWS WALK INTO A WAR…: Well, it does sound like the set-up for a joke. Playwright Seth Rozin, inspired by a news article, has found humor in the fact that there are only two Jews left in Kabul, Afghanistan, and they hate each other. What makes the evening so satisfying is that between the considerable laughter is a tale of renewal of faith. — Hap Erstein.

FANNY BRICE:
THE REAL FUNNY GIRL: You have to admire the risk-taking of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, beginning its subscription season with a world premiere musical, Fanny Brice: The Real Funny Girl. Nevertheless, audiences will likely spend most of the evening wishing they were seeing the real Funny Girl. — Hap Erstein.

Through Tuesday, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, 1001 E. Indiantown Road, Jupiter. Information: (561) 575-2223 or (800) 445-1666.
