Les Miserables is sure to spark your interest with great costumes incredible sets and a powerhouse of a cast. The show, which opened Tuesday night and plays for two weeks at the Broward Center’s Au Rene Theatre, is a musical masterpiece.
It is based on the novel by Victor Hugo and takes place in 19th-century Paris. The story tells the tale of redemption, of law and grace, and, of course, love. The orchestra conducted by Robert Billig brought Claude-Michel Schonberg’s score to life. Although the show was sometimes difficult to follow, because most of the dialogue is actually sung by the characters, there is natural flow and exquisite sounds that emanate from the stage in a perfectly choreographed production.
There is a huge, powerful cast of actors that have been part of extraordinary productions. Jean Valjean is played by Lawrence Clayton, Javert is played by Andrew Varela, Betsy Morgan plays Fantine, and Jenny Latimer plays Cosette.
The contagious “I Dreamed A Dream” was a crowd-pleaser as well as “Master of The House”, and “Stars”. Other favorites included the musical numbers which included the entire powerful company performing together, such as “One Day More” and “Finale”.
Steven Barkowsky of Ft. Lauderdale mentioned that although he has seen Les Miserables several times, it is still fantastic, especially the character of Varela’s Javert, which he said “was my favorite character and one of the best I have seen to play the part, even better than on Broadway itself.”
Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of Boublil & Schonberg’s Les Miserables is sure to please even if you have never heard of Victor Hugo; it absolutely remains a classic that will impress all.
