Pop-up Palm Beach: A history book like no other

By Barbara Marshall   |  Arts and Culture  |  July 15, 2011

At the turn of a page, an alligator raises its head to gaze menacingly at the tourists at Alligator Joe’s reptile farm in the Palm Beach of 1904.

A group of women and children pose near cottages on a desolate beach path in the 1890s, their pastel dresses popping out in sharp relief against a dangerous-looking hedge of Spanish bayonet.

Picking a soundtrack for a hot Florida summer

By Barbara Marshall   |  Music  |  July 15, 2011

If Florida’s

endless summer

had a soundtrack,

what would it be?

Buster Poindexter’s song Hot, Hot, Hot gets my vote.

(The video should include middle-aged women dancing with those fan misters.)

The scene maker: Music, mom-and-pop’s and memories with the kids

By Barbara Marshall   |  Events, Local music  |  June 20, 2011

Alex Zapatier, lead singer of the group The Kinected, is a fan of Little Moir's Fish Shack, the Leapin' Lizards kids gym and the Lotus Hair Studio. (Bill Ingram / The Post)

The scene maker: Alex Zapatier, Leader of the Band

Between gigs, this long-time South Florida musician knows his way around restaurants and kids’ playgrounds

WHO HE IS: Zapatier, 35, who lives in Palm Beach Gardens, is the lead guitarist and vocalist for The Kinected, a four-piece “pop/rock funk alternative” band, which was voted most popular band at SunFest in a pbpulse readers’ poll. The band’s first CD is available on iTunes.

FAVORITE PLACES TO HEAR LIVE MUSIC: “Maxi’s Lineup in Jupiter really supports original music. What I love about that place is that people are dancing and so close they’re practically singing into the microphone with me.”

“Boston’s on the Beach in Delray is great and so is Blue Martini at CityPlace. And of course, B.B. King’s.”

Maxi’s Lineup, 103 S. U.S. One, Jupiter, (561) 741-3626; Boston’s on the Beach, 40 S. Ocean Blvd., Delray Beach, (561) 278-3364; Blue Martini, CityPlace, West Palm Beach, (561) 835-8601; B. B. King’s Blues Club, CityPlace, (561) 420-8600.

FAVORITE RESTAURANTS: “The vibe at Little Moir’s Food Fish Shack (the same people who own Maxi’s Lineup) is so real and genuine and their sweet potato-encrusted grouper is just ridiculous. Bangkok O-cha is a little mom-and-pop Thai place on Palm Beach Lakes where the chicken pad thai is just brilliant. Echo in Palm Beach has short ribs with chili fried rice that are outrageously good.”

Little Moir’s Food Fish Shack, 103 S. U.S. One, Jupiter, (561)741-3626; Bangkok O-cha, 2062 Palm Beach Lakes Blvd., West Palm Beach, (561) 471-3163; Echo, 230A Sunrise Ave., Palm Beach, (561) 802-4222.

Moonlit Market, an evening farmers’ market

By Barbara Marshall   |  Dining, Events  |  June 10, 2011

Seasonal produce and fresh flowers are a hot commodity at the Moonlit farmers' market. (Libby Volgyes/The Palm Beach Post)

Earlier this spring, local farmer Jason McCobb grafted a bit of California wine country onto Boca Raton, and it seems to be taking.

With most area green markets closed for the summer, McCobb’s Moonlit Market is not only staying open during the hot months but has added trendy food trucks, entertainment and children’s activities to a growing list of vendors.

McCobb, aka “Farmer Jay,” patterned the evening market after those he visited while learning sustainable farming techniques in California with Alice Waters’ favorite farmer, Bob Cannard. Read the full story

The end of an era at John G’s

By Barbara Marshall   |  Dining  |  May 26, 2011

Elaine and Morty Hyman celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary at John G's. (Thomas Cordy / Palm Beach Post)

On Sunday, Elaine and Morty Hyman could have spent the morning of their anniversary having a leisurely breakfast at an oceanside table at the luxurious Four Seasons Resort, where they were spending the weekend.

Instead, the Lake Worth couple memorialized 45 years together with an hour’s wait in the hot sun, so they could have one final order of the famous cinnamon nut French toast at John G’s restaurant on Lake Worth’s beach.

"It’s been our special place since 1989," said Elaine.

Judging by a line of nearly 100 people snaking around two sides of the building at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, a lot of other folks are feeling equally nostalgic.

The 37-year-old landmark will close Monday morning, after the last French toast, Hawaiian omelettes and cheese-swathed hash browns leave the griddle.

It is one of several businesses forced to move out of the 1922 beach casino building, as the city of Lake Worth begins a long-awaited $6 million renovation this summer.

In July, John G’s on the Beach will reopen 2 miles south at the Plaza del Mar shopping center in Manalapan. So, for the past month, longtime customers have been making pilgrimages to enjoy a final meal at the original, beloved location.

Local radio’s cherished Everywoman, Jennifer Ross, bounces back

By Barbara Marshall   |  Radio  |  May 14, 2011

Through everything that life and the world of radio has thrown at Jennifer Ross, she refuses to be knocked down. (Brandon Kruse / Palm Beach Post)

Of all Jennifer Ross’ fans, the little guy hurtling toward her may be the most persistent in demanding her affections.

Squealing with joy, he launches himself at her legs – a 25-pound, thickly packed hunk of burning love for Ross, whose feet he proceeds to nuzzle with unalloyed ardor.

"Meet Poppy Chulo," she says, giving the potbellied pig a good scratching on the head.

Hearing her voice – and who doesn’t recognize that smoky contralto? – the rest of her menagerie, minus her two horses, bounds into the patio of her Palm City home. There’s Trixi, the Boston terrier; Annabelle, the Chihuahua-dachshund mix; and Toby, the 125-pound Saint Bernard puppy, who stretches to lick Ross’ face, almost knocking her over.

If he had, Ross has had plenty of experience in getting back up.

Gastrotruckers to converge in Boca

By Barbara Marshall   |  Dining  |  May 04, 2011

Can gourmet food trucks make it in Palm Beach County?

Jochen Esser thinks so, and to prove it, he’s hosting next week’s Food Truck Expo to introduce the culinary world’s trendiest concept to Palm Beach County – at last.

Chef-run gastrotrucks have been a staple of the Miami food scene for a few years now, and Esser believes it’s time for the concept to move north.

The Boca Raton Internet marketing executive became fascinated with the rolling restaurants after watching the Food Network’s Great Food Truck Race. He began visiting some of the weekly food truck meet-ups in Miami, where as many as 30 trucks park in a single location.

Now, he’s bringing the meet-up concept to Boomers in Boca Raton.

Esser says 25 trucks have signed up for the event, mostly from Miami and Fort Lauderdale, with Curbside Gourmet, West Palm Beach’s lone gastrotrucker, also on the list. (They were parked for several weeks with management issues, but are serving lunch once again near downtown West Palm Beach.)

In addition to gourmet fast food, Esser has signed up a mobile cigar store truck and booked entertainment, including a DJ, dance performance and boxing demonstration.

So fans can work off the barbecue pork sliders and homemade ice cream, Boomers is offering discount tickets on games such as go-kart racing, bumper boats and laser tag.

Food Truck Expo

Date: May 11, 6 to 10:30 p.m.

Location: Boomers, 3100 Airport Road, Boca Raton.

A weekend getaway: The secret gardens of Boca Raton

By Barbara Marshall   |  Arts and Culture, Events  |  May 03, 2011

Brandon Kruse/The Palm Beach Post

Ever want to peek over a fence for a glimpse of a special garden?

Next weekend, that impulse will be encouraged during the 8th annual Mounts Connoisseurs Garden Tour, which has become a Palm Beach County Mother’s Day tradition.

Spread over two days, the self-guided tour is a chance to go behind the gate of some of Palm Beach County’s most beautiful private gardens. This year, the tour’s stops are all in Boca Raton, where six gardens are on the list, including one behind a 1920s home designed by Addision Mizner. Read the full story

Starting at 6 the morning of the wedding, Samantha Barnes, who works at The British Depot in Lake Worth will join friends for bangers (sausages), British baked beans, fried bread, tomatoes and mushrooms.
