Psst! Lookin’ for a Rev-ival?

Then you’re in luck. The Reverend Horton Heat is coming back to Fort Lauderdale’s Culture Room on Sept. 14.

We recently spoke with the master of the Gretsch guitar, and he gave us some words of wisdom on a few topics, ranging from their walk-on music at shows to cuts from their latest record, Laughin’ & Cryin’ with The Reverend Horton Heat, on Yep Roc, which are included in this preview/record review.

If I had to describe the feeling true Reverend Horton Heat fans get at a show get when the lights dim and this old time radio intro walk-on music, sometimes it’s Flight of the Bumblebee from Al Hirt – Green Hornet (an outta sight trumpet player) (I asked the Rev…he told me)… begins to crackle and play…. (if you are close enough, you can see the lights gear up and flash on the amps through the mist in the room before the house lights go on…and that split second before the those lights come on you feel your hand throwing your thumb out to hitch a ride..it’s something your Momma told you not to do, but it just takes hold of you…and off you go…)

Archie McPhee product (horrorscope) guide

By Catherine Bochte   |  Arts and Culture  |  August 19, 2009

mcphee

Archie McPhee has been has been “serving up the bacon for 25 years.” It is the only place I know “where pickles yodel and lederhosen run free.” (free-roaming lederhosen?) They sell squirrel underpants and inflatable toast. *Sigh*

It’s a wonderful Seattle-based store that sells what some folks would call novelties. I call them necessities. Whenever I’m having a sad-clown day I turn to McPhee. My frown gets turned upside-down in a matter of seconds. It’s one of the brightest corners of the universe. If you buy products online, they mail ‘em out to you with a free gift in the box. It’s like getting a prize from a
cereal box and not having to eat all the cereal– or having someone yell at you for opening it up just to get the decoder ring.

The art of Derek Yaniger: Go wild!

By Catherine Bochte   |  Arts and Culture  |  August 12, 2009

By nature, I am a rockabilly gal, but I go hog-wild for anything monster surf or Tiki-related.

I knew I would never be the same when I heard Los Straitjackets play the “Titanic” theme in an Atlanta warehouse in a triple-billed show a few years back.

I LOVE Martin Denny and Esquivel.

I squealed in delight when I recently found a double CD of ‘Wild Guitar’ and ‘The Beatniks’ at my local Dollar Tree for a cool buck.

I covet an Eegah poster a friend used to have slapped to his wall (and pray to the Tiki gawds he has not sold it).

Tiki, you see, like, weaks me.

I am…doll parts (Halloween ideas)

By Catherine Bochte   |  Arts and Culture, Events  |  August 06, 2009

Ever been called a “doll?”

Be a doll and the life of the party this Halloween with a Barbie-inspired Doll Box costume, available at Buycostumes.com.

The inability to sit down might be an issue, as my co-worker mentioned, but with all the fun you’ll be having, why worry? The box is certain to be well-ventilated and your best friend can slide hors d’ oeuvres through the bottom; which you can quickly pick up with your feet and pop in your mouth when no one is looking.

Ever wonder what happened to John Kricfalusi?

Did the Ren & Stimpy creator and animator extraordinaire wander out into the forest of giants never to be heard from again? Did he head out to Hollywood to practice high-dives, poolside, with popular celebs?

Can you name this chef’s tune?

By Catherine Bochte   |  Dining  |  March 03, 2009

stumpy2
Wondering what to do with those Ramen noodles from 1992? Looking for a beat the clock (Iron Chef-ish) challenge with the weirdest ingredients you can think of (kangaroo, malt liquor and coconut) while campy ’70′s bells and whistles scream in the background?  Then Stump the Chef  is for you.  Watch as Chef Matt Weaver tries to make edible dishes from oddball ingredients.

Leslie’s Crab Cake Sandwich

Speaking of cooking and dining videos,  The Post’s own Leslie Gray Streeter now has a sandwich named after her at Clematis Social in downtown West Palm Beach.

It looks delish!

Watch it being made and Leslie chat with the chef in Gwen Berry’s video.
