Kailyn Van Riper had a mission: find a golden egg.
As she stood behind the starting line of her age group’s egg hunt at the annual Palm Beach Gardens Egg Extravaganza, the 8-year-old from Palm Beach Gardens spotted a golden egg on the green field.
She had a strategy.
Kailyn planned to search for a golden egg in the grassy area of the baseball field, while her best friend, Annalyn Cooper, 8, of Royal Palm Beach, searched in the clay area.
“I think there’s three golden eggs,” Kailyn said to Annalyn. “If I find two golden eggs, I’ll give you one.”
But some event workers noticed that some of the golden eggs were too close to the starting line and threw them far away, where Kailyn and Annalyn couldn’t see them.
“It’s OK,” Kailyn said unfazed. “I lost it now, but I know what section it’s in. I’m going to get it.”
Unfortunately for the girls, when an event worker tried to explain the rules of the game, he mistakenly said “go” and at least 30 kids took off prematurely.
The two best friends would soon follow.
Kailyn ran to the section where she thought she’d find a golden egg, but couldn’t didn’t see one.
Annalyn stuck to the plan, and walked around the clay areas and eventually joined the rest in the grass.
Both spotted golden eggs, but couldn’t get to them on time.
Kailyn and Annalyn were among the hundreds of kids participating in the event, which featured a fire engine and, of course, the Easter bunny. With their multicolored baskets, no child left without finding some of the 15,000 eggs.
When all the eggs were gone, the hunters returned to their parents. Some waved their golden eggs with pride. Kailyn and Annalyn were forced to walk among them.
Though the two girls were disappointed, they were willing to pose together for pictures at their mothers’ request.
“I was looking for the golden egg to see if there was any money in it,” Kailyn said, as she remembered snatching a golden egg once when she was “like 5 or 6.”
“We were going to share (the money) because we’re best friends,” Annalyn added. “And best friends stick together.”
