Kailyn Van Riper had a mission: find a golden egg.

As she stood behind the starting line of her age group’s egg hunt at the annual Palm Beach Gardens Egg Extravaganza, the 8-year-old from Palm Beach Gardens spotted a golden egg on the green field.

She had a strategy.

Kailyn planned to search for a golden egg in the grassy area of the baseball field, while her best friend, Annalyn Cooper, 8, of Royal Palm Beach, searched in the clay area.

“I think there’s three golden eggs,” Kailyn said to Annalyn. “If I find two golden eggs, I’ll give you one.”

But some event workers noticed that some of the golden eggs were too close to the starting line and threw them far away, where Kailyn and Annalyn couldn’t see them.

“It’s OK,” Kailyn said unfazed. “I lost it now, but I know what section it’s in. I’m going to get it.”

Unfortunately for the girls, when an event worker tried to explain the rules of the game, he mistakenly said “go” and at least 30 kids took off prematurely.

The two best friends would soon follow.

Kailyn ran to the section where she thought she’d find a golden egg, but couldn’t didn’t see one.

Annalyn stuck to the plan, and walked around the clay areas and eventually joined the rest in the grass.

Both spotted golden eggs, but couldn’t get to them on time.

Kailyn and Annalyn were among the hundreds of kids participating in the event, which featured a fire engine and, of course, the Easter bunny. With their multicolored baskets, no child left without finding some of the 15,000 eggs.

When all the eggs were gone, the hunters returned to their parents. Some waved their golden eggs with pride. Kailyn and Annalyn were forced to walk among them.

Though the two girls were disappointed, they were willing to pose together for pictures at their mothers’ request.

“I was looking for the golden egg to see if there was any money in it,” Kailyn said, as she remembered snatching a golden egg once when she was “like 5 or 6.”

“We were going to share (the money) because we’re best friends,” Annalyn added. “And best friends stick together.”

It’s true what Shakira says in her newest single: She is crazy, but I really do like it.

Wearing a pink wrap-around-like gown, Shakira popped up from an unexpected entrance and surprised her fans at the BankAtlantic center after her 4-year absence from South Florida.

Though Shakira was presented in Decemeber 2009 at the Y100 Jingle Ball Concert, she had never starred at the BankAtlantic Center. She was last seen in the American Airlines Arena in December 2006. Read the full story

Iron Man 2: Just as good, maybe even better than the first one

By Cynthia Roldan   |  Action  |  May 05, 2010

*No spoilers included*

After saying it multiple times to my friends, I now have the guts to say it publicly:

I feel that Iron Man 2 was better than the first one. This one actually has a real villain in it.

Jon Favreau did an excellent job bringing the Marvel Universe’s notorious playboy Tony Stark to life.

This movie touches more on Tony’s personal and alcohol issues than the first one. You feel proud and sad for Tony at the same time. After all, being a superhero is hard work, contrary to popular belief.

She says you can have it all, if you leave it up to her. But it wasn’t necessary to solely rely on Shakira as a closing act at Y100’s Jingle Ball to make the event a success.

From beginning to end, the show was able to grasp and maintain the attention of its crowd with the selection of artists, ranging from Iyaz to LMFAO and finally, to Shakira.

There was one minor detail that someone forgot to tell several artists, though; that they were in Fort Lauderdale — not Miami.

It’s simple enough to generalize by calling the crowd “South Florida” like some did, but LMFAO and Jason Derulo, who both attribute their roots to Miami, continually called the crowd anything but Fort Lauderdale.

Metallica brings an incredible show to BankAtlantic

They still have it.

With pyrotechnics and an incredible light show, Metallica performed for its fans at a packed BankAtlantic Center.

But what was most impressive was the energy of the four-man band and the precision to which they performed. A squared stage allowed all members to address all sides of the arena, leaving no side forgotten. Read the full story
