Children’s Home Society run fun for children, families

By Janis Fontaine   |  Events  |  February 08, 2012

This year's fun run for kids age 9 and younger will feature a grass course decorated with balloons. (Courtesy Children's Home Society)

For more than 45 years, the local Children’s Home Society of Florida, South Coastal Division, has served the needs of children and families in Palm Beach County, providing shelter for runaways and homeless teens, preventing child abuse and sponsoring intervention programs.

“We help about 30,000 people every year,” Daniela Mesquita, a development special for CHS, said. “Federal dollars are shrinking and some of our programs have been cut, but we just have to do the best we can with the dollars we have.”

Some of those dollars come from the annual fund-raiser — the For the Love of Children 5K Run/Walk — which takes place Saturday at Carlin Park. Last year about 400 people ran in support of CHS. They’re hoping for a bigger turnout this year. With the support of local volunteers and businesses, they keep costs down.

“Most of the legwork for this annual event is done by volunteers,” Mesquita said. “The Gold Coast Guild (an auxiliary group that helps with fund-raisers) has been putting the event together for nine years. We have more than 20 teams so far, and getting a team together works so well. It’s more fun when you’re part of a team.”
