DJ Ruen: From new disco to Brazilian parties, this rising young star is ready to annihilate

By Miami.com   |  Music  |  November 23, 2010

By Rayme Samuels

DJ Ruen (a.k.a. Brandon Pendleton) has one very simple goal – turn the Miami DJ scene on its head. We recently caught up with the rising young star to talk about his passion for new disco music, spinning at parties in Brazil, and his mix tape dreams.

Explain the name and how you got started.
I got started in 1997 when I started going to underground parties and raves. I’ve always been into music but those parties pushed me into DJ-ing. The name is simple but it makes sense. Ruen means to annihilate – I destroy the clubs with my music. Read the full story

Shepard Fairey adds artistic touch to Miami’s Wynwood

By Miami.com   |  Arts and Culture, Dining  |  November 18, 2010

By FRED GONZALEZ

When Tony Goldman had the vision for the Wynwood Walls project, the artwork of famed street artist Shepard Fairey found another home.

The iconic work of Fairey’s, the artist behind the famed Obama campaign poster and the Andre the Giant image emblazoned with the word “Obey”, has now found its way indoors in another of Goldman’s projects – along with his daughter Jessica Goldman Srebnick – at the soon to be open Wynwood Kitchen & Bar (2550 N.W. 2nd Ave., Miami).

The space, which is set to open on Friday, Nov. 26 and is just north of Joey’s restaurant, features a bar area that is wrapped in Fairey’s pop art from floor to ceiling. After receiving blue prints for the space and dimensions for the walls, it was a blank canvas for Fairey to create whatever he wanted. One can’t help but stare at the mix of modular murals and distressed designs, discovering intricate hidden details in his work, all while enjoying a cocktail or some bar food.

The merger between art and dining reaches a new level at Wynwood Kitchen and Bar, and Fairey’s work only accentuates the energy prevalent in the Wynwood area.

By Miami.com   |  Movies  |  November 10, 2010

By Michael Hamersly

You know a DJ is big when both Madonna and U2 pick him to open their concerts, and they don’t get any bigger than British legend Paul Oakenfold. The Perfecto Records label-head is a master of crafting euphoric house music with a rock-’n-roll edge, having created epic remixes of hits by Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Led Zeppelin and The Cure, plus dozens of original tracks. He even performed on the Great Wall of China, plus has a delirious weekly party at Rain in Las Vegas featuring 75 circus performers. Oakenfold hits LIV at the Fontainebleau Saturday night for his Facelift Tour. Get there early for the opening act, Nervo – Aussie twin sisters who have written hit singles for David Guetta, Kylie Minogue, Armin Van Buuren and Ke$ha. A chance night turns into the start of something special for this DJ

By Miami.com   |  Music  |  November 08, 2010

By Rayme Samuels

DJ Mr. Mauricio has been shaking up the scene since he first hit the decks at Liquid nightclub way back when. We recently caught up with the Miami veteran to discuss his unexpected start, his years on the airwaves, and playing with Outkast.

What has been the best part of being with the SKAM family?
The fact is that SKAM is the leader in DJ management, period. Sujit Kundu (SKAM founder) and I always say, “We are the Yankees of this game.” I say this coming from other management situations prior. Sujit runs SKAM like a family, and we are all friends. There’s no fuss and fighting about work, we all work and we all eat. Plus, Sujit is one of my closest friends so to me it’s definitely not a “work” thing! I see it as “my boy runs his company and gets me paper at same time”! It’s a win/win in my eyes.

British DJ brings house music to SOHO Studios in Wynwood on Friday night

By Miami.com   |  Music News  |  November 05, 2010

By Michael Hamersly

When you want to get down – REALLY get down and dirty – Steve Lawler is your man. Why else would the British DJ be nicknamed the “King of Space,” after the famous nightclub in Ibiza (not Miami’s own Space, which he’s also left his musical mark many times)? Lawler plays a brand of house music that’s groovy, dirty, filthy and spine-tingling, just the way you like it – for a taste, check out his CD compilation series “Dark Drums,” “Lights Out” and now “Viva.” And he’s commandeering SOHO Studios in Miami’s up-and-coming Wynwood art district Friday night for an epic party as part of his 13-city tour by bus. Lawler talked to Miami.com about the tour and why you don’t want to miss it. Read the full story
