Wearing all black and sporting his trademark Wayfarers, Jay-Z came out on the BankAtlantic Center stage with one goal, to give everyone there a concert to remember. This was a night which all Jay-Z fans will be boasting about for months, if not years, to come.

Jay-Z, also known as Shawn Carter, holds the record for No. 1 albums in the Billboard 200 and for selling more records than Elvis, the King himself. His success was apparent last night at the concert, the first concert in his BP3 tour, as every song he would perform got louder cheers than the last.

Broken Lizard performs broken-down Improv show

By Olenka Luna   |  Comedy, Stand-up Comedy  |  January 26, 2010

Broken Lizard, the five-guy filmmaking comedy group best known for Super Troopers, Beerfest, and Club Dread performed live at the Palm Beach Improv on Jan. 22-23. While these guys are known to have knee-slappingly funny-movies, their stand up show only got a few giggles.

Broken Lizard formed at Colgate University as a student sketch group. After graduating, moving to New York, and performing in a few stand-up shows, the five guys went on to movie making. Their films resemble traditional fraternity-style films such as Animal House, Porky’s, and Revenge of the Nerds.

Now, the group of five guys has returned to the world to stand-up, embarking on a nationwide tour. But after the show they gave at the Improv this past weekend, their return to their stand-up roots gives off doubt.

The show started off well, when the boys walked onto the stage with their Super Troopers cop outfits on. Jokes from their films were told and sketches were performed, but as time went on the laughter in the room seemed to get dim. The sketches were a little hard to understand and the jokes were a little old.

‘MadTV’ star Bobby Lee a spectacular stand-up

“How is everyone tonight? Like my new haircut? I look like a Chinese Beatle, or like the little scary Chinese boy from The Ring. Hissss!”

From the very start of his standup show, to the very end where he ended up wearing just a bright red thong, Bobby Lee had the audience’s attention glued to the stage. Laughter boomed throughout the Palm Beach Improv, on Friday, September 11th, as Lee gave nothing short of a spectacular show.

“I love black people … I’ve seen Rush Hour; I know how well we get along!”

Bobby Lee’s sense of humor is priceless. He is honest, sarcastic, and very, almost overly, confident. He spoke of events in his life that are easy to relate to, like his strict ethnic father who speaks almost no English but always manages to make fun of him in front of prospective girlfriends.

“You guys ever eat Thai food?… Thai food is so spicy that even demons in hell think it’s hot!”

Lee’s jokes are extremely random, never following any sort of storyline or subject. He would go from talking about girlfriends and how annoying it was to cuddle with them, to Japanese porn and how weird it is.

The show’s ending was an unforgettable one, as Lee pulled two men up from the audience and gave them a lap dance, wearing only a tiny thong. After he dismissed the men, he made one last closing statement and then walked through the audience, out of the venue, in his little thong.

Lee has appeared in shows such as Premium Blend and “The Tonight Show”, and has also made appearances in the movies, “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” and “Kickin’ it Old Skool”. But the show in which Bobby Lee has gotten most of his recognized fame from is of course, MADtv, in which Lee was a regular.

I strongly recommend that anyone try to make it out to the Improv and see Bobby Lee’s show. He is an amazing performer and put on one of the funniest stand up shows I have ever seen. He had me in tears from laughing so much!

Bobby Lee will also be playing the Improv in Coconut Grove, Miami, beginning Friday. For more information, please click their Web site.

Jim Norton keeps it honest, funny

What was supposed to be a stand-up show at the Palm Beach Improv, felt more like a night of drinking and funny storytelling between friends at a downtown bar. Jim Norton’s show made one feel as if they were being entertained by that one really hilarious friend everyone has, not a professional comedian.

Norton, a New Jersey native, is best described as brutally honest. His humor has no boundaries and he has no shame in discussing personal matters. His very open persona makes his shows easy to connect with and keeps everyone entertained and laughing.

Friday’s show at the Improv was a mix of jokes that revolved around politics, sex, sports, and entertainment.

“Isn’t it amazing how shallow America is?” Norton said, “Susan Boyle, on Britain’s Got Talent became famous because she is ugly and sings!” Norton explained that people felt considerate and compassionate when appreciating and being moved by Boyle’s singing. “It’s as if we were amazed that an ugly person can sing! — Look everyone! The beast sings!”

Norton then went on to discuss the new Obama presidency, baseball and steroid use, keeping up sexually with his much younger girlfriend, David Carradine’s rather embarrassing way of dying, and taking an animal’s side when they attack humans.

“The more I hear about an animal attack, the more I hate the victims,” Norton said. “There was a recent attack at a zoo, where a tiger escaped and attacked three friends, killing one — turns out the guys were throwing rocks at the tiger — the tiger targeted and killed the one with a slingshot.” Norton argued that people should know not to mess with a huge animal with sharp teeth and claws, and that the tiger had every right to be “pissed off”.

Norton is also the best-selling author of the book Happy Endings: The Tales of a Meaty-Breasted Zilch, has had quite a few appearances on HBO, and is part of the “Opie & Anthony Radio Show”. If you want to check out his work, come out to the show at the Improv Saturday.

Review: Louis C.K.’s ‘Hilarious’ night at the Improv

After almost tripping over a chair in the dark, crowded Palm Beach Improv, Louis C.K. climbed to the stage, grabbed the microphone, and stared out onto the audience, offering no smile, just an odd jumble of greetings, “Hello. How is everybody? That is here tonight? Doing?”

This would be the beginning of a slightly awkward but knee-slappingly funny night.

Louis C.K.’s show was part of his national theater tour titled “Hilarious” featuring his new material. The show covered various everyday subjects including impatient people, aging, the pains of traveling on airplanes, extreme road rage, and the annoying side of raising children.

“Hilarious” had people constantly red-faced and teary-eyed from laughing. The clapping would go on and on, and the cheers were endless. He knew just what jokes to make by talking about things ordinary people could easily relate to.

One of the main points that seems to make Louis C.K. stand out as a comedian, is his wittiness and his, “I don’t give a f—!” attitude, not to mention his prominent use of the word “f—”. At one point in the night he demonstrated just how witty he could get — though clearly, Louis’ humor isn’t exactly for everyone.

“I think molesting children should be legal … just hear me out!” He laughed and went on to explain that if molesting kids would be OK in our system, kids wouldn’t have to get kidnapped and murdered after being molested. Parents would simply get their children back and maybe the molester could even “drop them off at soccer practice afterwards.”

The joke got different reactions. Some laughed, others were too shocked to speak, and some even booed. At the booers, Louis had one thing to say to them: “Oh shut up! If you don’t like it then leave!”

Without a single doubt, Louis C.K.’s show “Hilarious” was nothing but hilarious. If you have a chance to check it out, definitely do. Only a talented comedian can go from talking about being overweight, to cursing at people while driving, to wanting to strangle his children at times, all as if it were one simple but very funny conversation; and only a talented comedian can make someone laugh at some pretty sick subjects.

Louis C.K. will be performing tonight at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. at the Palm Beach Improv. For tickets, go to the club’s Web site or call (561) 833-1812.
