‘Empowered Women’ exhibit to open at Osceola32 in Stuart

By Post Staff   |  Arts and Culture  |  February 09, 2012

Osceola32, a gallery and design studio that calls itself "a bit of Soho in Stuart," offers a new exhibit exploring the power of women, "The Magical Journey of Empowered Women," opening Friday, Feb. 10. Three artists are featured in the exhibit: Rachel Tribble, Patricia Curtis and Katie Henderson.

"As women, we have integrated our knowledge and wisdom and embraced the glory of our complexity. Our passion as we evolve as women is magical and daring. Empowered women think outside the box," said Rachel Goldberg, co-owners of the gallery with Michael Gordon Penn.

"The exhibition exemplifies how women can overcome, spread joy, provoke thought and connect to the infinite possibilities in life, no matter what limitations they may have," Goldberg said. "These women weave a tapestry with their art, portraying what it means to be an empowered woman."

Featured artist Tribble is a nationally known, award-winning artist whose surreal work is both meditative and captivating. She is a committed environmentalist and also a jewelry designer, and she’s currently collaborating with Disney.

Curtis is an established impressionistic painter who is drawn to color and textures. Curtis is fascinated with things and people that others may shy away from. She has learned to look for the beauty, and wants others to as well. She also teaches stress relief classes through art.

Henderson, owner of Miss Katie’s Kreations in St. Lucie West, is devoted to fashion and her vibrant abstract art shows her colorful perspective on embracing living.

This is the first show for the self-taught artist, 29, who has Down syndrome.

‘The Magical Journey of Empowered Women’

Where: Osceola32 Gallery and Design, 32 S.E. Osceola St., Stuart

When: Opening reception 6-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10; exhibit runs through March 10

Fall in love with these dessert wines for Valentine’s Day

By Post Staff   |  Dessert/ice wines  |  February 07, 2012

In Victorian-era novels, the men are always gathering in one room after dinner for cigars and port/sherry while the women split off to do goodness knows what (knit?) elsewhere. We always knew women got the short end of that deal, because we know how delicious port/sherry/madeira can be. Save the crocheting, give us some dessert wine.

With Valentine’s Day coming up, let’s debunk these dessert wine myths: they are all very sweet, they are just for special occasions, they’re just good with cigars. The truth: The men in those novels weren’t drinking ultra-sweet wines, you should really have a bottle in your home most of the time, and they can help make some foods a terrific eating experience.

We tried a variety of dessert wines made all over the world that were sent to us for review. Pair any of these with some goodies and you’ll have a dinner to remember.

Road trip: Head north to the Martin County Fair

By Post Staff   |  Events  |  February 07, 2012

Country singer Craig Campbell and Christian music act The Great Transparency are among the performers at this year's Martin County Fair.

The Martin County Fair is Martin County’s biggest annual event, drawing more than 70,000 visitors to Stuart over 10 days. Its volunteer organization has more than 130 members donating more than 10,000 hours help to organize and host the fair each year so you can have a good time.

The money generated from the fair is used for improvements to the fairgrounds, scholarships and programs for Martin County youth, so when you buy that ticket you can feel good about it.

Directions, nearby dining, invite a friend

Here are five things not to miss at the fair:

1. Country singer Craig Campbell. For Campbell, “Family Man” is not just the name of his first hit song, it’s literally who he is. He followed up the sweet ballad with the totally fun, tongue-in-cheek “Fish”. You can count on hearing both those songs when he performs at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16. Tickets are $10 at the gate.

2. Martin County Fair Kids’ Club. The Kids Club is new this year and membership is open to any child age 4-7. The first 400 club members receive a Kids’ Club backpack. Activities that introduce kids to agriculture include milking a cow and roping a calf. Sign up in Building A. The Family Video Scavenger Hunt on Feb. 15 requires a video camera or smart phone. Get directions at the Kid’s Stage.

Tour Da Vinci’s exhibit at London’s National Gallery … at the multiplex

By Post Staff   |  Arts and Culture, Movies  |  February 01, 2012

'The Last Supper', one of Da Vinci's most famous works, is among the works on display in the Fathom Events showing 'Leonardo Live'.

In an effort to get people into movie theaters, many of the multiplex chains are offering one-night only showings of everything from rock concert films to New York opera productions.

This month, NCM Fathom, which does most of the screenings across the country, is broadening its cultural offerings.

On Feb. 16, you can see a filmed tour of the current Leonardo da Vinci exhibit at London’s National Gallery, where the Wall Street Journal reports that patrons are queuing up at dawn to get tickets that are being scalped for prices up to $600. Here, you can see it for a ticket price of $12.50.

The HD movie will show highlights of the 60-work show, which features paintings and sculptures from the years Da Vinci was a court painter in Milan.

Speaking of British, Fathom will also offer a screening of the National Theater’s production of Travelling Light, the new Nicholas Wright play about the dawning of cinema. Other films include two Metropolitan Opera productions, a sequel to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera and a concert by the L.A. Philharmonic.
