Another go-round for Schmidt, still lustful, still improving

By Post Staff   |  Arts and Culture, Books  |  May 13, 2012

SCHMIDT STEPS BACK, by Louis Begley. Knopf; 352 pages; $25.95.

Schmidt Steps Back is Louis Begley’s third novel about Arthur Schmidt, the widowed Wall Street banker grappling with age, an intransigent daughter, incipient anti-Semitism, and the vague possibility of a fourth act.

When last we saw Schmidt, back in 2000′s Schmidt Delivered, he had graciously sent off his young mistress to be married, even though she was carrying a child that might be Schmidt’s. As the new novel opens, Carrie is about to deliver said baby, and the identity of the father is still up in the air.

Begley supplies Schmidt with an ever-generous fairy godfather in the person of the incalculably wealthy Mike Mansour, who employs Schmidt at his foundation, and whose generosity allows Schmidt to spend considerable amounts of money trying to put his daughter’s emotional toothpaste back in the tube.

It also allows him to spend a lot of time in Paris, where he can continue his pursuit of Alice, the widow of a former colleague with whom Schmidt is more or less madly in love, not to mention lust.

Kinfolks SoulFood Festival: Good food, good music

By Post Staff   |  Events, Music News  |  May 10, 2012

Dru Hill (Photo from druhillonline.com)

Smoky barbecue, fried fish, greens and cornbread, you’ll find it here.

Once your belly’s full, settle back in the lawn chair you brought and listen to a full day’s entertainment of soul music.
Artists tapped to perform are:
The Whispers
This legendary band from the ’60s has left an indelible mark on R&B, with smooth as silk vocals, tight harmonies and plain old class.
Rachelle Ferrell
The gentle spirit and incredible range of the lovely Rachelle Ferrell, along with her skillful, inspired piano riffs, makes her a must-see.
Zapp
Zapp originated in the imaginations of three of the five Troutman brothers: Lester, Larry and Roger, joined later by Terry and Gregory Jackson. The band’s fresh sound inspired funk players with its hand clapped-drum beat funk, and techno-geeks with its use of the talk box, and everything from West Coast hip-hop to G-funk.
Next
This R&B group became popular in the ’90s led by R.L. Huggar, best known for the sexy hits, Too Close, Wifey and Butta Love. Expect to hear those and perhaps a few original compositions he’s written for some other performers including Jamie Foxx.
Dru Hill
Still most recognized for bandmember Sisqo’s hit, Thong Song, this group has a repertoire that includes blues, soul and gospel. After changes in members and focus, the band released nDRUpendence Day, its fourth album, in 2010, which features Tao, the group’s new member. Three singles have been released: Love MD, Remain Silent and Back to the Future.
Tevin Campbell
Campbell was introduced to the R&B world by Quincy Jones in 1989. His  debut single, Tomorrow (A Better You Better Me), shot to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip hop Singles chart. He’s been nominated for six Grammys and has released four albums. You’ll surely hear his hits, including: Tell Me What You Want Me to Do, Alone with You, Goodbye, Can We Talk, I’m Ready, and Always in My Heart.
