Stuart firefighter competes in national cook-off on ‘Regis and Kelly,’ and you can vote

By Sonja Isger   |  Contest, Daytime talk shows, Dinner  |  May 21, 2010

David Harrow’s job is on the line. If he wants to make probation with the Stuart Fire Department he has to get… a lot of votes.

Votes for his Firehouse Penne recipe. The one that has landed him a spot this morning on the Live with Regis and Kelly show.

The morning show is conducting a coast-to-coast Fire House Cook-Off and Harrow’s made the cut.

You can see Harrow and the other contestants here, watch their videos, and vote. David’s up against five other firefighters and their recipes:

Buffalo Chicken Lasagne from Chicago.
Smothered Buffalo Chicken Toes over Dirty Rice from Oviedo, Florida.
Spicy Chicken Tortilla Soup out of San Jose.
And Lemon Chicken Pasta from Miamisburg, Ohio.

And I thought a Fire House cook-off would be ripe with chili.

Nope.

Find fireworks displays near you

The aisles of Sky King Fireworks are piled high with bottle rockets, firecrackers, reloadable shells. Things that launch into the air and explode.

And they’re illegal.

Yet on Wednesday morning, business was steady.

Why? Well because the customers here – and at other fireworks stores and stands across town and across the state – are willing to lie (or sign their names on a legal waiver without question) to get them.

And no one is about to call them on it.

Renee stands at the check out counter loaded with things that go bang for the upcoming Fourth of July.

Before the clerk takes her money, she must sign a one-page “verification certificate.”

“I read it last year, it’s like they are not responsible and we could be held liable …”

Actually, the waiver states she’s going to use these fireworks to scare birds from crops, use it as a railroad signal, or to quarry stone.

Is that the case?

No.

You can’t be bitter over doughnuts

By Sonja Isger   |  Dessert, Freebies  |  June 05, 2009

You can’t be bitter over doughnuts. But you can get stuffed.

And that’s why Carol D’Angio, our local finalist in the national “Create Dunkin’s Next doughnut,” who in the end lost to an Alabama man with a toffee topped creation, did not start National doughnut Day with a doughnut.

“I had my doughnut overload,” she conceded in a whisper, as she rehashed details of the contest’s bake-off. “It was a week ago, but it got to the point you simply couldn’t eat an entire doughnut.”

A dozen doughnuts in one sitting will do that to you.

Last month, we learned D’Angio a Palm Beach Gardens woman who works at a bank, had a lucky hunch that a doughnut filled with chocolate butter cream and topped with peanut butter icing would be tasty. The concept landed her in the top 12 of Dunkin’s national contest and a shot at $12,000.

Then it was time for the online vote. And her “A Nutter One” creation was the third most popular in that arena — behind entries titled sm’OREO and Chocolate Monkey.
