The reunited Beach Boys’ first concert is scheduled for April 27 at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. No other dates have been announced, but as stated in an earlier story, bands playing the New Orleans fest often look to head down to West Palm Beach for SunFest in West Palm Beach. If not SunFest, another South Florida date could possibly be in the works.

The surviving founding members of the classic rock group — Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine — announced Friday they are getting back together to celebrate their 50th anniversary. They’re working on a new album and also plan a 50-date tour that will take them around the world.

5 reasons to see Larry The Cable Guy at the Kravis

By Post Staff and wire services   |  Events  |  November 17, 2011

D.L. Hughley returns to the Palm Beach Improv >>

1. He’s Larry The Local Guy! He’s Dan Whitney, a Nebraska kid who moved to Palm Beach County in his teens and attended King’s Academy and Berean Christian.

2. Whitney began his career here! Long before he created Larry, his Git-R-Done trademark and became a fixture on movies and TV, he hung around the now-defunct Comedy Corner on Dixie Highway, acting as doorman, performing at open mic nights and getting opportunities to hone his stand-up act. Years later, Whitney proved he hadn’t forgotten when he attended the funeral of the Comedy Corner/Carefree Center owner, promoter Jon Stoll. Read the full story

The Thanksgiving Primer: Tips on how to prepare the perfect feast

By Post Staff and wire services   |  Dining, Recipes  |  November 16, 2011

(AP Photo/Matthew Mead)

Taking Your Pulse: What’s your favorite place for dining out on Thanksgiving?

Talking turkey size: If you’re planning on a big bird, you must have a big refrigerator-freezer. Turkeys must stay frozen and be thawed in cool temperatures to prevent food poisoning.

If you’re buying a whole bird, figure 1 pound per person. Remember that only about 50 percent of a whole turkey is edible. If buying a breast or other parts, plan ½ to ¾ pound of meat per person.
So, if you have 12 guests, you’d need 6 to 9 pounds of meat, which you would find on a 12- to 18-pound turkey. (If you want leftovers, go for the 18-pounder.) Read the full story

By Post Staff and wire services   |  Dining, Feast Palm Beach  |  October 12, 2011

Buccan chef Clay Conley, who in less than a year has transformed the culinary scene on Palm Beach, has assembled a crew of powerhouse chefs for a late-October feast to raise money for Share Our Strength, a national nonprofit group working to end childhood hunger in America.

Cooking in Conley’s open, bustling kitchen: star chef Jonathan Waxman (Barbuto, New York), a pioneer in modern American gastronomy, Timon Balloo, who’s garnered national attention at his Sugarcane Raw Bar Grill in Miami, R.J. Cooper (Rouge 24, Washington D.C.), a modernist chef who’s kicked up a capital stir with his 24-course menu options, and Palm Beach’s own Jim Leiken, Café Boulud’s executive chef.

Food Buzz: Michelle Bernstein’s ‘PB Taste’ menu hits eclectic notes

By Post Staff and wire services   |  Dining  |  July 06, 2011

Michelle Bernstein unveiled her new summer menu with unexpected flaoves on Sunday at the Omphoy resort.

The ever eclectic Michelle Bernstein unveiled Sunday a new summer menu of cool, spicy notes, unexpected flavor combos (red cherries and capers!) and fresh, seasonal fare at her eponymous restaurant at the Omphoy resort.

As we learned at Bernstein’s preview tasting last week, there’s much to love about the prix fixe menu the chef calls “PB Taste,” including its price – $35 per person for three inspired courses. Inspired as in a feather-light chickpea panisse, a vegan main course option of small, golden cubes made of fine garbanzo flour paired with simply stewed fresh tomatoes, kale and mushrooms. Yummy bites aplenty at food festival to benefit dog beach

By Post Staff and wire services   |  Dining  |  May 18, 2011

There were many delicious reasons to love Saturday’s Friends of Jupiter Beach Food & Wine Festival. From Buccan chef Clay Conley’s sinful hot dog panini to The Omphoy’s chef Lindsay Autry’s refreshing watermelon-feta salad to Food Shack’s shrimp sofrito and ceviche.

Our favorite bites were a couple of soul-warming dishes that seemed made to order for the blustery afternoon. We just swooned over shopowner Lenore Pinello’s feta-stuffed fresh corn ravioli with lobster sauce. Pinello, who owns In The Kitchen shop and cooking school in Tequesta, recreated the flavor profile of a yummy corn-lobster chowder in the light pasta pillows.

We also loved Gulfstream Café’s rich, silky she-crab soup, a Charleston-style cream soup that’s a popular item at the Jupiter café ($6.25 a bowl at the restaurant).

And even as stormy skies loomed overhead, the mood beneath the bridge at the Riverwalk remained sunny, thanks to the parade of pooches in attendance. The tail-wagging pups had a reason to be happy – the sold-out event benefits their dog-friendly beach.

Culinary school honors Guanabanas’ team

They’ve made their alma mater proud. Five kitchen team members at Guanabanas restaurant and tiki bar in Jupiter took top alum honors last week during Lincoln Culinary Institute’s graduation ceremonies in West Palm Beach.

Sharing the title of 2011 Alumni of the Year were Guanabanas’ general manager Jon Sullivan, chefs Vinny Trupia and Ian Zimmerman, sous chef Ross Meltzer and bar manager Andrew Hietpas.

It was the first time the school, formerly the Florida Culinary Institute, split the honor among a group of graduates.

Table-flipping ‘Housewife’ dishes: ‘Have your pasta and your skinny jeans, too’

THE BOOK: Fabulicious! Teresa’s Italian Family Cookbook, by Teresa Giudice with Heather Maclean ($18.95, Running Press)

The author and co-star of Bravo TV’s Real Housewives of New Jersey follows her Skinny Italian cookbook with more of the same.

RECIPE PHOTOS: 31

AUTHOR PHOTOS: 29

TAKE-AWAY MESSAGE: She will make you love her children.

SIMPLEST RECIPE: Roasted Asparagus Alla Parmigiana . "Spread the asparagus in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet. Drizzle with the oil. Roll the asparagus in the oil to coat. Season with salt and pepper. Roast, turning the asparagus after 5 minutes, until the asparagus is crisp-tender, about 10 minutes. . . ."

MOST RIDICULOUS RECIPE: Audriana’s Creamy Polenta, allegedly the favorite dish of Giudice’s 1-year-old daughter. The headnote is ostensibly written by the author’s 6-year-old daughter: "Hi, it’s me, Gabriella."

INGREDIENT SHE DEMONIZES: Vegetable oil. (Giudice uses only olive oil.)

SAMPLE TIP: "If I can teach you nothing else in this entire book, learn this: Flirt with your butcher!"

CELEBRITY WATCH: Food personality and cookbook author Rachael Ray is mentioned, and Giudice drops Sophia Loren’s name ("one of my personal heroes"). There are the expected Real Housewives plugs, plus a mention of Andy Cohen, a Bravo TV executive vice president.

VANITY MOMENT: "As so many of you have written me and attested – I already knew this because I have four kids and don’t work out – if you eat home-cooked, fresh, authentic Italian food, you can have your pasta and your skinny jeans, too."

IN SOUTH BEACH: Teresa Giudice appears at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Books & Books, 927 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. She’ll be autographing books bought at the store. For more info, visit booksandbooks.com or call (305) 532-3222 .

Meet ‘Real Housewives of New York’ star Ramona – and her pinot

By Post Staff and wire services   |  Dining  |  May 11, 2011

Ramona Singer, here at the show's Season 4 premier in New York, brings her pinot to the area this week.

As any Real Housewives of New York fan knows, Ramona Singer loves her pinot grigio. (And by “loves” we mean “joined at the hip to” her pinot.) She touts its virtues, clamors for it at parties, pours it fast and wide from the bottle.

So it’s no surprise that when the Bravo TV reality star comes to town this week, she’ll be carting the juice. Of course, it’s no ordinary wine – it’s her signature pinot, Ramona Singer Pinot Grigio. Read the full story
