Yummy bites aplenty at food festival to benefit dog beach

By Post Staff and wire services   |  Dining  |  May 18, 2011

There were many delicious reasons to love Saturday’s Friends of Jupiter Beach Food & Wine Festival. From Buccan chef Clay Conley’s sinful hot dog panini to The Omphoy’s chef Lindsay Autry’s refreshing watermelon-feta salad to Food Shack’s shrimp sofrito and ceviche.

Our favorite bites were a couple of soul-warming dishes that seemed made to order for the blustery afternoon. We just swooned over shopowner Lenore Pinello’s feta-stuffed fresh corn ravioli with lobster sauce. Pinello, who owns In The Kitchen shop and cooking school in Tequesta, recreated the flavor profile of a yummy corn-lobster chowder in the light pasta pillows.

We also loved Gulfstream Café’s rich, silky she-crab soup, a Charleston-style cream soup that’s a popular item at the Jupiter café ($6.25 a bowl at the restaurant).

And even as stormy skies loomed overhead, the mood beneath the bridge at the Riverwalk remained sunny, thanks to the parade of pooches in attendance. The tail-wagging pups had a reason to be happy – the sold-out event benefits their dog-friendly beach.

Culinary school honors Guanabanas’ team

They’ve made their alma mater proud. Five kitchen team members at Guanabanas restaurant and tiki bar in Jupiter took top alum honors last week during Lincoln Culinary Institute’s graduation ceremonies in West Palm Beach.

Sharing the title of 2011 Alumni of the Year were Guanabanas’ general manager Jon Sullivan, chefs Vinny Trupia and Ian Zimmerman, sous chef Ross Meltzer and bar manager Andrew Hietpas.

It was the first time the school, formerly the Florida Culinary Institute, split the honor among a group of graduates.

Table-flipping ‘Housewife’ dishes: ‘Have your pasta and your skinny jeans, too’

THE BOOK: Fabulicious! Teresa’s Italian Family Cookbook, by Teresa Giudice with Heather Maclean ($18.95, Running Press)

The author and co-star of Bravo TV’s Real Housewives of New Jersey follows her Skinny Italian cookbook with more of the same.

RECIPE PHOTOS: 31

AUTHOR PHOTOS: 29

TAKE-AWAY MESSAGE: She will make you love her children.

SIMPLEST RECIPE: Roasted Asparagus Alla Parmigiana . "Spread the asparagus in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet. Drizzle with the oil. Roll the asparagus in the oil to coat. Season with salt and pepper. Roast, turning the asparagus after 5 minutes, until the asparagus is crisp-tender, about 10 minutes. . . ."

MOST RIDICULOUS RECIPE: Audriana’s Creamy Polenta, allegedly the favorite dish of Giudice’s 1-year-old daughter. The headnote is ostensibly written by the author’s 6-year-old daughter: "Hi, it’s me, Gabriella."

INGREDIENT SHE DEMONIZES: Vegetable oil. (Giudice uses only olive oil.)

SAMPLE TIP: "If I can teach you nothing else in this entire book, learn this: Flirt with your butcher!"

CELEBRITY WATCH: Food personality and cookbook author Rachael Ray is mentioned, and Giudice drops Sophia Loren’s name ("one of my personal heroes"). There are the expected Real Housewives plugs, plus a mention of Andy Cohen, a Bravo TV executive vice president.

VANITY MOMENT: "As so many of you have written me and attested – I already knew this because I have four kids and don’t work out – if you eat home-cooked, fresh, authentic Italian food, you can have your pasta and your skinny jeans, too."

IN SOUTH BEACH: Teresa Giudice appears at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Books & Books, 927 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. She’ll be autographing books bought at the store. For more info, visit booksandbooks.com or call (305) 532-3222 .

Meet ‘Real Housewives of New York’ star Ramona – and her pinot

By Post Staff and wire services   |  Dining  |  May 11, 2011

Ramona Singer, here at the show's Season 4 premier in New York, brings her pinot to the area this week.

As any Real Housewives of New York fan knows, Ramona Singer loves her pinot grigio. (And by “loves” we mean “joined at the hip to” her pinot.) She touts its virtues, clamors for it at parties, pours it fast and wide from the bottle.

So it’s no surprise that when the Bravo TV reality star comes to town this week, she’ll be carting the juice. Of course, it’s no ordinary wine – it’s her signature pinot, Ramona Singer Pinot Grigio. Read the full story

Report: Charlie Sheen enters rehab

By Post Staff and wire services   |  Celeb Stalker, Drama, TV  |  January 28, 2011

Hours after being released from a Los Angeles hospital, Charlie Sheen has entered rehab, according to the Los Angeles Times blog Show Tracker.

Sheen’s publicist, Stan Rosenfield, said the Two and a Half Men star went voluntarily:

“He is most grateful to all who have expressed their concern. Sheen asks that his privacy be respected at this time and that no additional informational will be provided.”

Show Tracker also reported that as a result, CBS, Warner Bros. Television and executive producer Chuck Lorre are putting Two and a Half Men on production hiatus.

On Thursday, Sheen had been taken to the hospital complaining of severe stomach pains. Rosenfield said the 45-year-old actor has a history of hernia problems.

Sheen has been dogged by personal problems and apparent health issues, with three hospitalizations in three months. Two weeks ago, CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler said the network has a “high level of concern” about its hard-partying star.

“Two and a Half Men,” the centerpiece of CBS’ Monday comedy lineup, continues to be the most popular sitcom on network television.

An actor who once had a small part on “Ugly Betty” was charged Tuesday with stabbing his mother to death with a 3-foot sword in her home after a fight, police said.

Officers responding to a call of a family dispute found 55-year-old Yannick Brea kneeling in the bathroom of her Brooklyn apartment at about 2:20 a.m. She had cuts to her head and was pronounced dead at the scene, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

“In a bedroom was her son … with a 3-foot sword,” Kelly said.

Official: NYPD called to Charlie Sheen’s hotel

By Post Staff and wire services   |  Arrests, Celeb Stalker, TV  |  October 26, 2010

A law enforcement official says actor Charlie Sheen was hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation after a woman told police he was throwing furniture in his New York City hotel room.

The official tells The Associated Press that police were called to Sheen’s room at The Plaza around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The official says a woman in his room told police the 45-year-old star of CBS’ “Two and a Half Men” was highly intoxicated and had been yelling and throwing furniture. The official says Sheen was not arrested, but checked himself into a hospital for an evaluation.

According to an article in the New York Daily News, Sheen, who is married to former Benjamin School student Brooke Mueller, returned from a night of drinking with an unidentified woman before the incident.

The article reports that the woman was an escort, and later found naked and locked in a closet.

It also reports that Sheen was accompanied to the hospital by his ex-wife, Denise Richards, who was staying in the same hotel. The former couple was seen earlier in the week with their daughters attending Mary Poppins on Broadway.

Singing for her supper? Not super-thin Lea Michele of ‘Glee’

By Post Staff and wire services   |  TV  |  August 30, 2010

Shrunken Starlet: Actress Lea Michele at the 62nd Annual Directors Guild of America on Jan 30 (far left) and noticeably thinner 7 months later at the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

When Glee premieres Sept. 21, the perfectionistic songbird Rachel Berry – played by Lea Michele – will look like a bird.

Michele lost weight over the summer, prompting tabloid and Internet chatter that she’s the latest Hollywood ingenue to succumb to “lollipop-head” syndrome – where you get so thin your head looks too big for your body.

Michele told OK! magazine that her weight loss was due to being a vegan.

“You need a lot of energy to play spunky Rachel Berry, so I’ve tried a lot of different things – and so far, this is working,” she said.

Reports: FCC clears way for viewing first-run films at home earlier

By Post Staff and wire services   |  DVDs  |  May 07, 2010

According to several news sources, the Federal Communications Commissions has granted movie studios as limited waiver that makes it easier for them to offer first-run films for home viewing in early release windows.

The Los Angeles Times and The Hollywood Reporter both report that the move would allow studios to show the films shortly after — or even during — their release in theaters, before they came out on Blu-Ray or DVD.

The key to the ruling is a set-top box which prevents home-recording of the films, which had been a hurdle to delivering first-run films directly to home viewers.

Currently, movies are made available for home viewing on pay-per-view, usually six months after first appearing in theaters and three months after coming out on DVD.
