Just in time for holidays, Foodpickle offers free cooking help via Twitter, text message

By Victoria Malmer   |  Dining  |  November 10, 2010

Help has arrived, cooks. Next time you can’t remember how long to boil an egg for hard-boiled (10 minutes at a gentle simmer) or need a recipe that uses Damson plums, you can get an answer via Twitter or SMS text message. You can also ask the question on the foodpickle section of food52.com.

Food52 co-founder Merrill Stubbs said: “Foodpickle has been a great success already, and we wanted to make it even more user-friendly and instantaneous. By adding an SMS feature, we’re opening up the service to anyone with a mobile phone, so people can ask questions from the grocery store or in front of the stove, just like they’d text their moms for cooking advice.” If their mom was texting-savvy.

Recent questions answered: How to adjust brining technique for kosher chicken/turkey, and what to do with a dozen quail eggs.

Free Sierra Mist on Saturday at Wal-Mart supercenters

By Victoria Malmer   |  Beverages, Freebies  |  October 07, 2010

PepsiCo will spend at least $3 million to give away at least 10 million free cans of Sierra Mist Natural this Saturday at 2,800 Wal-Mart supercenters nationwide to introduce its new version of the lemon-lime soda.

Last month the company announced it was remaking the drink by using sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup and getting rid of preservatives.

It added “Natural” to the name to cater to shoppers’ desire to avoid artificial ingredients and launched a major marketing campaign.

Shoppers are concerned about artificial ingredients, so companies are removing high fructose corn syrup from a slew of products.

They’re touting these moves in everything from ketchup to cola to attract shoppers.

The Associated Press contributed to this article.
