New In Town: What exit? I don’t know!

By Zlata Faerman   |  New In Town  |  August 30, 2010

Editor’s Note: Welcome to our continuing series “New In Town”, where newcomers to Palm Beach County talk about what makes their new home unique. Today, new Palm Beach Gardens resident Zlata Faerman, who also is the writer of the blog I Have Zlata Thoughts, vents about Florida’s confusing way of talking about exits from I-95. If you’ve lived in the area less than six months, and you’d like to contribute, give us a shout at pbpulse@pbpost.com.

Would you believe it if I told you that there was a recent study conducted that the worst state of drivers in the United States is New York, followed by New Jersey as the number-two state?

Florida is somewhere in the 30’s. I’m extremely interested in talking to all 500,000 people surveyed.

Not only are the drivers in Florida the absolute worst, but their road concept is beyond. What does that mean? I’ll elaborate: In New Jersey, major highway exits are designated by numbers mostly – though of course, the town/street name is also present.

New In Town: Delray’s Caliente Kitchen

By Zlata Faerman   |  Dining, New In Town, Restaurant reviews  |  August 25, 2010

Editor’s Note: Welcome to our continuing series “New In Town”, where newcomers to Palm Beach County talk about what makes their new home unique. Today, new Palm Beach Gardens resident Zlata Faerman, who also is the writer of the blog I Have Zlata Thoughts, checks out Delray Beach’s Caliente Kitchen. If you’ve lived in the area less than six months, and you’d like to contribute, give us a shout at pbpulse@pbpost.com.

Directions, leave a review

I went to Caliente Kitchen for dinner in Delray Beach. Located on a prime address on Atlantic Avenue, the aesthetic appeal of the restaurant is unsurpassed. It’s the only restaurant on Atlantic Avenue with a large patio on its side for outdoor seating, socializing and of course, smoking cigarettes. Equipped with fans donned with misters, the patio area is a fantastic locale for socializing or hosting Happy Hours.

Since all venues on Atlantic Avenue close at 2 a.m., if you’re hungry, you can come over to Caliente’s side window for late-night tacos — it stays open until 3 a.m.!

Caliente aims to please their guests with constant check-ins from the uber-glam wait staff (not one person averages lower than an “8″) and a large selection of Mexican-themed cuisine.

Since we went out to eat pretty late, I decided on the Mexican Cobb Salad, which was absolutely fantastic. Though I’m a die-hard fan of Rocco’s Tacos Taco Salad, last night’s meal hit the spot. My boyfriend ordered a burrito, which he said was “pretty good” and a friend of mine ordered the fish tacos, also “pretty good.” Though there are a few small changes I’d make if this were my restaurant, one thing that definitely needs to be “upped” is their dessert menu. My boyfriend wanted something, but they only had one choice: Flan. Um … really??

When we were leaving, the crowd started pouring in heavy — no doubt because Delray is a bit of a “scene” at night. I loved the location, I love Delray and I definitely would go back to Caliente Kitchen!

Q&A: ‘The Other Guys’ director Adam McKay

By Zlata Faerman   |  Comedy  |  August 23, 2010

Already well known for his work with Will Ferrell on Anchorman and Talladega Nights, director/writer Adam McKay has another comedy hit on his hands with The Other Guys, a buddy-cop comedy with Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. Zlata Faerman of the blog I Have Zlata Thoughts caught up with McKay for a Q&A:

If you had to point to Fair Lawn on a map of New Jersey, could you do it?

McKay: I would look around Mount Clair? Is that close? I grew up in Philly so I have some limited Jersey knowledge.

Were there any hidden messages throughout the movie? For instance, I noticed Will’s glasses were skewed just slightly the whole movie.

McKay: When Mark is drinking beer with Ferrell by the water, he’s drinking a Laughing Clown Malt Liquor, which is the beer Ricky Bobby drove for in Talledega Nights. Also, there’s a Cobra poster in Wahlberg’s apartment … I’m sure there are others but off the top of my head, those are the ones I remember.

New In Town: Amber Alerts vs. Silver Alerts

By Zlata Faerman   |  New In Town  |  August 23, 2010

Editor’s Note: Welcome to our continuing series “New In Town”, where newcomers to Palm Beach County talk about what makes their new home unique. Today, new Palm Beach Gardens resident Zlata Faerman, who also is the writer of the blog I Have Zlata Thoughts, talks about the Silver Alert phenomenon. If you’ve lived in the area less than six months, and you’d like to contribute, give us a shout at pbpulse@pbpost.com.

In New Jersey, I was getting accustomed to Amber Alerts. You know, when there’s a missing child. MySpace was good about posting these alerts – and sometimes they’d even come up in between commercials or before the news at 10 p.m. Anyway you saw them, you knew it was for a missing child.

Well, on the roads here in Florida, they have signs up above (similar to where N.J. would warn you of bridge and tunnel traffic) with something called Silver Alerts. Never heard of this before? No?

Let me enlighten you: A Silver Alert is a public notification system to broadcast information about missing persons — especially seniors with Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia or other mental disabilities — in order to aid in their return.

That’s right. A Silver Alert notifies drivers of the lost senior citizen’s car, license plate number, etc. so that we can bring this Oldie but Goodie back home, safe and sound.

Here’s an idea: Re-certify drivers when they get to be a certain age. I understanding seeing a Silver Alert once in a while, but there’s a different one everyday! I just feel bad for these folks!!

So yeah – Silver Alerts vs. Amber Alerts … Difference between New Jersey and Florida.

New in Town vs. the (possibly dead) lizard

By Zlata Faerman   |  New In Town  |  August 09, 2010

Editor’s Note: We’ve just started a new series called “New In Town”, where newcomers to Palm Beach County check out the restaurants, bars, clubs and venues that make our home fun. Today, new Palm Beach Gardens resident Zlata Faerman, who also is the writer of the blog I Have Zlata Thoughts, discovers navigating the kitchen to turn off an alarm can be difficult if you’re not used to dealing with lizards. If you’ve lived in the area less than six months, and you’d like to contribute, give us a shout at pbpulse@pbpost.com.

This story will best be told by bullet points:

• Upon getting off at my exit on I-95, I decide to call my friend Danielle to chat for about five minutes until I get home.

• I pull into my garage and open the door (through the garage like I normally do) which puts me directly into the kitchen.

• Directly in my line of sight is a lizard, perched in front of the dishwasher, next to the rug in front of the sink.

• Still on the phone, I begin freaking out now, as I have to walk past this lizard to get to other side of the house to tend to the beeping alarm for which I only have one minute to reach and enter the proper code.
