This week’s bar: Village Tavern

The scene: Don’t let the “tavern” name fool you: This is a modern-day bar and restaurant in the smart vein of such contemporary eateries as Houston’s and J. Alexander’s. The bar area offers comfortable seating at the physical bar, plus booths and high-tops. A wall of classic books gives the place an upscale feel, but two flat-screen televisions, tuned to the game-day action, lend the tavern a sports-bar vibe as well.

The Tavern attracts a nicely diverse crowd, from singles looking to mingle to older couples from the nearby condo communities.

Signature cocktail: The Hope-tini ($7.50) is the drink to order through the end of October. This slightly sweet and thoroughly distinctive concoction, which blends cranberry juice and cream with spirits of different sorts, was created in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with $2 from the sale of each Hope-tini going to benefit breast cancer research.

Other noteworthy libations: They like to get very creative with their cocktails here. Take the V-Tea ($9), like a more distinctive version of Long Island iced tea, with a boost of flavor from house-brewed organic green tea. Or the Organic Pink Sangria ($7 glass, $24pitcher) that’s made with rose syrup and garnished with organic rose petals: a very exotic alternative to the traditional sangria. And if you’re looking for a killer Bloody Mary, try the Mary Me ($7), which contains such ingredients as fresh lemon and lime juice to steak sauce to pressed garlic — quite a zesty combo.

Bar bites: There’s a small menu exclusive to the bar, offering some stylishly presented, tasty treats and finger foods. Try the maple cinnamon-flavored sweet potato fries ($4.95) or the French dip sliders ($7.75). But you also can order from the regular menu, which features excellent bar-friendly fare, such as steamed mussels in garlic sauce ($9.95) and bacon-wrapped scallops ($11.95). And the St. Barth’s Chocolate Torte ($6.50) makes a great bar dessert — like a brownie in cake form.

Deals: Take your pick of two happy hours. The early evening one (3:30 to 6:30 p.m., Monday to Friday) features $3.50 well drinks, $5 margaritas, mojitos and martinis and $3 domestic drafts; the late evening one (9 p.m. to close, Monday to Thursday; 10 p.m. to close, Friday and Saturday) features cocktails at half price.

Other specials include a Monday night burger-and-brew $8 combo during football season and a Wednesday wine night with glasses (more than 60 selections) at half price.

Hope-tini

1 ounce vodka

1/2 ounce Tuaca Italian liqueur

1/2 ounce Malibu Rum (original coconut variety)

Splash of cranberry juice

Splash of cream

Splash of simple syrup

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and then pour into a martini glass. Garnish with a lime twist.
