This week’s bar: Reef Rd Rum Bar

The scene: Think tiki, but not tacky. The former Clematis Social space, with its cosmopolitan shininess and huge wall-covering photos of local luminaries, has been transformed into the most tasteful of surf shacks. The decor neatly follows the laid-back theme without becoming a theme park. And the tasteful touches — colorful round lanterns hanging overhead in nets made to look like buoys, lamps made from genuine puffer fish — are everywhere. The Happy Hour crowd, according to manager Fernando Vega, ranges from Clematis club goers to businessmen just off work, looking to finish the day with a tropical drink and seafood-centric munchies.

Signature cocktail: At Reef Rd, it’s all in the name: Rum is the signature spirit here. The bar boasts 129 of them — and the rum-laden mojito ($10), featuring Bacardi Superior, is the signature drink. Make that drinks — there are 10 flavors of the Cuban-born concoction on the menu, including blueberry, raspberry, mango and the spicy-sweet strawberry jalapeño. Vega says the difference between theirs and other mojitos is the fresh ingredients, favoring real pureed fruit to already flavored rums.

Other noteworthy libations: You know how we said that Reef Rd takes its rum very, very seriously? They also kick it old-school, bringing back classic rum drinks like the Bahama Mama, the Mai-Tai and daiquiris, all $10.

Bar bites: Reef Rd specializes in seafood — it is beachy, after all — and its signature appetizers are a diverse mix of sea-inspired yummies. There’s Cleve’s Seared Ahi Tuna ($10.99), named for part-owner Cleve Mash; the Rum Shack Shrimp ($9.99) and the house-made fish dip ($9.99) and crab dip ($10.99). Also popular are the accurately named Buttery Biscuits ($5.99), served with jam.

Deals: Specials abound at Reef Rd — Happy Hour (Monday-Friday, 5-7 p.m.) features $5 mojitos; Monday is Reggae Night, with live reggae, $5 mojitos, $3 Red Stripe beer from Jamaica and $5 drinks made with Sailor Jerry spiced rum, usually $8. And Wednesdays are ladies night, with $3 well rum drinks and house red and white wines all night long.

Info: Reef Rd Rum Bar, 223 Clematis St., West Palm Beach. (561) 838-9099
