By Jonathan Tully   |  Beverages, Taking Your Pulse  |  July 25, 2011

Caffeine fiends, you have spoken — and your choice for top local coffee spot is Dunkin Donuts.

Dunkin Donuts beat out Starbucks and several other stores, picking up 25.6 percent of the vote.

Starbucks was next on the list at 18.4 percent, followed by Paris Bakery in West Palm Beach at 7.2 percent and West Palm’s Havana at 6.4.

Tied in fifth place are Tulipan Bakery, Harold’s Coffee (in West Palm’s Northwood neighborhood) and Coffee District in Delray Beach, all at 5.6 percent.

Howard’s was the big write-in success story, pulling in several of your “other” votes. Also making write-in waves was Panera Bread.

The Avenue Cocktail part of a fun, lengthy drink menu at The Office in Delray Beach

By Leslie Gray Streeter   |  Bars and Clubs, Beer, wine and alcohol, Beverages, Recipes  |  November 18, 2010

(Damon Higgins The Palm Beach Post)

This week’s bar: The Office

The scene: Nestled at the corner of busy, trendy Atlantic Avenue and Northeast Second Avenue, there’s an often-crowded, always tastefully cheeky hybrid of classic Mad Men corporate chic and high-minded modern design called The Office. A project of Vic and Angelo’s owner David Manero, and designed by wife Lynn, the fun is in the details, like gunny place mats with clever quotes about drinking (“He was a wise man who invented beer.” – Plato), menus that arrive in manila envelopes, the old school office mailbox on the wall and the bar with seats both out on the sidewalk and inside the restaurant. General Manager Oscar Morales says it’s “a gastropub, not quite a restaurant, not quite a bar,” translating into an after-work and family crowd early in the evening, and a more scenester vibe at night.

The signature drink: The Avenue cocktail ($12) is both a tribute to that style-making thoroughfare on which The Office sits, and to the marriage of vodkas (vanilla and cherry), strawberries and pineapple. Fruit! It does a taste bud good! Read the full story

Ghoulish treats for grown-ups on Halloween

By Associated Press   |  Beverages, Dessert, Halloween, Holiday Dining  |  October 27, 2010

Inspired by Halloweens most iconic candies these candy corn cupcakes are a totally different take on the familiar yellow, orange and white treat. (AP Photo/Larry Crowe)

CANDY CORN CUPCAKES

No actual candy corn is harmed in the making of this recipe. But there would be nothing stopping you from sprinkling a few over the white frosting.

To get these cupcakes to bake up with clear distinctions between the yellow and orange layers of the cake, the recipe uses a pound cake batter, rather than a traditional (and lighter) yellow cake batter. The result is a rich and hearty cupcake. Read the full story

Free Sierra Mist on Saturday at Wal-Mart supercenters

By Victoria Malmer   |  Beverages, Freebies  |  October 07, 2010

PepsiCo will spend at least $3 million to give away at least 10 million free cans of Sierra Mist Natural this Saturday at 2,800 Wal-Mart supercenters nationwide to introduce its new version of the lemon-lime soda.

Last month the company announced it was remaking the drink by using sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup and getting rid of preservatives.

It added “Natural” to the name to cater to shoppers’ desire to avoid artificial ingredients and launched a major marketing campaign.

Shoppers are concerned about artificial ingredients, so companies are removing high fructose corn syrup from a slew of products.

They’re touting these moves in everything from ketchup to cola to attract shoppers.

This week’s bar: III Forks

The scene: A fireplace, a piano, a wine cellar, private rooms for parties — III Forks is an upscale, old-school restaurant experience. The Palm Beach Gardens location is one of seven Forks restaurants; another is in Boca Raton.

Signature cocktail: The Blood Orange Berry Mojito ($12.50), a harmonious blend of citrus, berry and mint flavors, plus the fizz of club soda.

Other noteworthy libations: Round up the usual suspects – martinis, margaritas, Manhattans and a Strong Island Iced Tea – and add an insane wine list. If you can’t find an alcoholic beverage to suit your palate here, hand in your drinking license, my friend.

Maker’s Mark to uncap first new bourbon since ’50s

By Associated Press   |  Beverages  |  June 07, 2010

LORETTO, Ky. — It seemed like any other day at the Maker’s Mark Distillery, as workers dunked tops of whiskey bottles into tubs of red wax. Only this time, the bottles were different — and so was the bourbon.

Since the late 1950s, the quaint distillery tucked into the Kentucky hills has churned out just one product — Maker’s Mark. That’s changing with next month’s introduction of Maker’s 46, a close cousin of the original but with a different aging method in the final weeks to give the whiskey a distinctive taste.

While the world of expensive spirits is rife with offshoots, Maker’s was steadfast in clinging to a single product until now.

“This is our first creation in 52 years, and it really is a creation,” Maker’s Mark President Bill Samuels Jr. said. “It’s not like it’s Maker’s with a couple of more years age on it.”

To create the product, master distiller Kevin Smith started with Maker’s and dabbled for more than a year before hitting on the recipe.

Whiskey barrels storing Maker’s are emptied so workers can insert oak planks inside each. The barrels are refilled and aged two to three months longer than traditional Maker’s, which ages six to seven years. As Maker’s 46 mingles with the wood, it takes on stronger hints of caramel, spice and vanilla, Smith said.

The new whiskey sprung up from consumer demand, Smith said. When Maker’s executives met with customers or bartenders, the question invariably arose: When was Maker’s going to offer a new whiskey?

The product’s name is a tip of the cap to the brand’s barrel maker and one of its top executives, who came up with the unique idea of using seared French oak planks inside the barrel to draw out more flavors. The product’s name reflects the profile number attached to the process.

The new product is 94 proof, slightly higher than traditional Maker’s.

Plans are to produce 25,000 9-liter cases of Maker’s 46 this year for U.S. distribution, Smith said. That’s a drop in the bucket for the distiller, where overall production this year could surpass 1 million cases for the first time. Maker’s 46 will run about $10 more per bottle than traditional Maker’s, which generally costs $23 to $25 per 750ml bottle.

The new bourbon comes at a time when the market for top-shelf spirits is shrinking, stung by the recession and its aftermath. Sales of liquor brands in Maker’s 46 price range tumbled 5.1 percent in 2009, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States.

Maker’s Mark is part of Deerfield, Ill.-based Fortune Brands Inc., whose brands also include Jim Beam.

Chuck Cowdery, an American whiskey writer and author of “Bourbon, Straight,” said Maker’s 46 is “really terrific” and predicted it will be well-received.

“They resisted doing this for a long time because they’ve always told consumers, ‘This is the best bourbon,’” he said. “They always thought it would be confusing to the brand image if they brought out something else. But it was that consumer that started telling them, ‘Try something a little different now and then.’”

With its brisk foot traffic, outdoor events and energetic dining scene, West Palm Beach’s Clematis district seems a welcome shore for the nation’s "gastro pub" wave. The gastro pub concept, popular in England for more than a decade, showcases good, brasserie-style dishes in a casual tavern setting. At its best, it’s epicurean fare with a bluejeans aesthetic.

Of course, achieving this is no laid-back feat – it requires juggling seemingly contradictory elements of style and substance. Imagine a comfy booze joint with menu references to truffle oil and micro greens and fleur de sel.

This is what managing partner Gene Playter and chef Scott Helm have done in opening Gratify American gastro pub in the old Spoto’s location on Datura Street. They’ve hit the right balance between relaxed (the atmosphere) and resplendent (the food).
