Report: Beers to be sold with Whoppers on South Beach

By South Florida Sun-Sentinel   |  Fast food  |  January 22, 2010

Burger King will unveil plans Friday to open a new Whopper Bar in South Beach that will sell beer and burgers, USA Today reports.

The bar is scheduled to open in mid-February.

The plans don’t include selling beer at conventional Burger Kings.

More Whopper Bars could be coming to New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, says Chuck Fallon, president of Miami-based Burger King North America.

Burger King revamp aims at higher-priced kin

Burger King Corp. plans to swap its generic fast-food feel and bland tiles and tabletops for a vibe that’s more sit-down than drive-through.

As part of a plan to be revealed Wednesday in Amsterdam, the company will announce a massive effort to overhaul its 12,000 locations worldwide. The sleek interior will include rotating red flame chandeliers, brilliant TV-screen menus and industrial-inspired corrugated metal and brick walls.

“I’d call it more contemporary, edgy, futuristic,” Chairman and CEO John Chidsey told The Associated Press. “It feels so much more like an upscale restaurant.”

But that comes with an upscale price: The new look is expected to cost franchisees, who operate 90 percent of Burger King’s locations, between $300,000 to $600,000 per restaurant.

The company said the new design, called “20/20″ at the Miami-based chain, is already in place at about 60 locations around the world. Burger King expects about 75 more redesigned restaurants to be open by the end of next year. But it will take years before all its locations are transformed.

The skinny: Start early to teach kids healthy eating

By Associated Press   |  Dining, Fast food, Health, Kid-friendly meals, Low calorie, Recipes  |  October 07, 2009

Television and peers can trump parents when it comes to influencing what children eat, but that doesn’t mean families can’t fight back.

A Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health study found that parents have waning influence over what their kids eat. But it also found that the best defense is to start teaching healthy eating habits early.

Adopting common-sense approaches at home can help:

First, be careful about forbidding certain foods. A good/bad approach often makes less healthy foods more attractive. It also limits children’s ability to develop the skills they need to make their own healthful food choices.

Quick cooking: Cubed, skewered meats

Looking to get dinner on the table fast? Put it on a stick.

Cutting meats and vegetables into smaller bits, then threading them onto skewers can dramatically reduce cooking time because there is no thick center for the heat to reach. A pound of chicken breasts left whole will take far longer to cook than the same amount of meat cubed and skewered.

The texture of the meat also benefits. Because cooking time is less, the meat (especially pork and chicken) have less time to dry out.

In this recipe for pork satay, boneless country-style ribs are cut into chunks and given a quick marinade before landing on the grill. They also could be cooked on a grill pan or under the broiler.

An easy apple chutney can be made to accompany the pork. Or to save even more time, skip that part of the recipe and use purchased mango chutney.

New KFC “Double Down” dumps the bun

Sometimes a sandwich is so big, so tasty and so thick that those carb-loaded bookends we call buns just aren’t necessary.

That’s the premise behind Kentucky Fried Chicken’s latest calorie-laden creation: the Double Down Chicken Sandwich, two chicken fillets hugging cheeses, bacon and sauce, sans the bun.

KFC hasn’t released actual caloric counts, but has told media outlets such as the Huffington Post that it estimates the sandwich to weigh in at roughly 600 calories. The Vancouver Sun, however, estimates the Double Down at nearly double that number, with 1,228 calories.

How many calories in that KFC meal?

The nutritional information legislation would apply to only about 25 percent of the country's 1 million restaurants. Michael Dwyer, STF

A food fight is brewing over legislation in Washington that would require restaurants to post calories on menus.

Hoping to clean up a patchwork of what it says are unwieldy state and local laws, a restaurant trade group is pushing a federal bill that would require chains to disclose the calorie counts of meals on the menu.

But companies such as Domino’s, KFC and El Pollo Loco say the proposed legislation lets too many restaurants off the hook.

Life couldn’t be finer, say lovebirds who met at The Hut

By Anne Rodgers   |  Dairy, Dessert, Dinner, Fast food  |  July 21, 2009
Three couples who all met at The Hut in West Palm Beach in the 50s are still married.

Three couples who all met at The Hut in West Palm Beach in the 50s are still married.

Maybe the fountain drinks at The Hut were spiked with Love Potion #9, or maybe it was just coincidence, but something about that gathering spot must have worked its magic to keep the knot securely tied for couples who met there.

So it was a fun reunion the other day when three couples who first laid eyes on each other back in the ’50s at The Hut gathered to reminisce about the iconic West Palm Beach drive-in and the role it played in their romances.

Joining them: the Hut’s biggest fan, Jimmy Williams, a graduate of the former Palm Beach High School, whose hand-painted mural of the old-time Hut covers one entire wall of an upstairs bedroom.

Lou and Pearl Eassa, who were celebrating their 47th anniversary that very day, told about the evening Lou pulled his car in beside hers, then ended up talking to Pearl’s girlfriend so much that his future sweetie became a bit jealous.

“I had my nose out of joint,” Pearl said, but when Lou called the next day, she eventually agreed to accompany him on a picnic. Pearl was 19, Lou was 21, and since she worked at the hospital and found out he’d been treated there, she pulled his file to check up on him.

He must have made the grade; when Lou proposed six months after they met, Pearl said yes.

Gale Anderson met her husband, Charlie, at The Hut in the summer of 1958, when she was working at the five-and-dime after her freshman year of college. When she and a friend walked up, Charlie remembers warning his friends, “Guys, I’ve got dibs on the one in red shorts.”

He lied and told her he was a football player, but while walking her home, he realized he wanted to tell only the truth to this special girl. He asked for a date the next night, and “spent the whole time unraveling everything I’d said before.”
On the third date, he proposed.

“We dated for two years by Greyhound and letter,” Charlie said. “We wrote every day — but I bet I haven’t written 15 letters since.”
The couple retired to Tennessee a few years back, so their visit served as an excuse to reunite the friends.
Jimmy arranged it all, since he’s stayed connected to everyone.

“Jimmy is the hub of a wheel,” Gale said. “He stays in touch and is like our conduit.”

Judie Affron and Chuck Stoddard, longtime Haverhill residents and the third couple, met in October of 1960.

“I had pulled up in my white DeSoto and he had a baby blue Lincoln,” remembered Judie, a ’59 graduate of Palm Beach High.

“She thought I was crazy because I ordered a beer and a glass of milk,” said Chuck, who had an ulcer at 23.

Judie said he asked if she’d like to go to the country or the city.

“I said I liked the country and we ended up at the drive-in!”

Don’t ask her what movie was playing; she doesn’t remember — and neither does Chuck.

“Who watched the movie?” she giggled.

The frisky couple has now been together 48 years.

And if that’s not proof that Love Potion #9 was being distributed at The Hut, what is?

Chestnut wins NY hot dog eating match, 3d in row

By Associated Press   |  Contest, Fast food, Funny, Human nature  |  July 06, 2009

nathans

Joey Chestnut chomped down a record 68 hot dogs, capturing his third straight July Fourth hot-dog eating contest at Coney Island, an annual showcase for flamboyant hot dogging contestants eager to show they really are what they eat.

Chestnut of San Jose, Calif., hoisted the American flag and then stood proudly like an Olympic athlete as “The Star-Spangled Banner” played following his 68 to 64 1/2 dog victory over his archrival, six-time titleholder Takeru Kobayashi.

As soon as he knew he had won, he shot his right fist into the air, his mouth still bulging while he chewed the last of his wieners at Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest.
