Italian festival organizers add $5 fee for admission

By Charles Passy   |  Beverages, Events, Hispanic, Italian, Meal deals  |  November 04, 2009

Event Details: Directions, admission info, more

More: Frank Stallone headliner for Feast of Little Italy

The feast is on. But with a few significant changes.

The Feast of Little Italy (561-427-0500, feastoflittleitaly.com), one of the increasingly popular events on the annual local foodie calendar, returns to Jupiter’s Abacoa Town Center this weekend.
But for the first time in the feast’s seven-year history, organizers are now charging admission — albeit a modest $5 at the door (children 12 and under are still free).

Blame it on financial pressures, says event producer Jerry Somma. “I would have loved to have kept itfree,” he adds. But given his goal to “keep the tradition alive” without “compromising the integrity of the event,” he says the charge became necessary.

At the same time, patrons do get a bit for their money, including free wine seminars (courtesy of Banfi) and cooking demos (courtesy of Sorrento Cheese) and free concerts (by Frank Stallone, Peter Lemongello and the Legends of Doo Wop, among other acts). There’s also a kiddie area, with games and other activities.

Eat at Chili’s today to help St. Jude hospital

By Victoria Malmer   |  Breaking news, Meal deals  |  September 28, 2009

Today, if you dine out at Chili’s Grill & Bar for lunch or dinner (or both!) you’ll be supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

chilis2

As National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month ends, participating Chili’s restaurants around the country will be donating up to 100% of the day’s profits to St. Jude.

For more on the one-day event, click here.

To find a Chili’s near you, click here.

You can also visit www.createapepper.com to make an online donation.

Chili’s has raised $25 million of its 10-year, $50 million commitment to St. Jude. When completed, the donation will be the largest donation from a single partner campaign in St. Jude history. But Chili’s and St. Jude’s relationship goes beyond money. In 2007, the two celebrated the opening of the Chili’s Care Center.

The seven-story, 340,000-square-foot center combines 21st century technology with St. Jude’s proven approach to medical research: put patients and scientists in the same building to fast-track the translation of new knowledge into better care for children.

Casual Greek eatery adds variety to Royal Palm Beach scene

The Greek restaurant boom continues.

The latest addition to the ever-growing list of local Greek eateries is I’m Greek Today (11051 Southern Blvd., Royal Palm Beach; 561-333-4233; imgreektoday.com), a family-run restaurant situated in the space formerly belonging to Naylah.

“The timing was right,” explained owner Chris Papas of his new venture. The former Canadian restaurateur is referring to the fact that Greek food is getting plenty popular locally — think Ouzo Blue in Lake Worth and Palm Beach Gardens, Taverna Opa in CityPlace, Mr. Gyros in Palm Beach Gardens — but there still wasn’t a Greek restaurant of note in the western communities. Plus, Papas was able to move into a space that was already fairly well-suited for his concept.

“We’ve done a cosmetic makeover. It’s a similar space with the elimination of a wall here and there,” he said of the transition from Naylah to I’m Greek Today.

Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. open in Delray Beach Aug. 10

By Victoria Malmer   |  Breakfast, Meal deals, Tried and New  |  August 03, 2009

brooklynbagels1As anyone who has ever been in the New York area knows, Brooklyn bagels have a unique taste and quality – and thanks to a patented water process – the bagels are now available in Delray Beach.

The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co.
is launching its first restaurant on Aug. 10 at 14451 S. Military Trail. The restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch and early dinner, bottling Original Brooklyn Water – and where patrons can watch as bagels are made fresh all day.

The first 100 customers at the grand opening Aug. 10 will receive a gift of ½ dozen bagels, a bottled six pack of Original Brooklyn Water and a bag of Brooklyn’s Best coffee, a medium roast specially blended by Boca Java. The Delray Beach restaurant opens at 6 a.m.

Many have attempted to recreate New York bagels without success. Until now. When President and CEO Steven M. Fassberg realized the water made the bagel, he sought and obtained the exclusive rights to the patented technology that can replicate Brooklyn water from any water source.

Using that water, the company has developed their own unique proprietary bagel recipes producing a true Brooklyn bagel, with a thin, crusty exterior that’s golden brown and moist, but not doughy. The Original Brooklyn Water is used for all the restaurant’s food and beverages and is bottled and sold at the restaurant.

The 3,000-square-foot Delray Beach store – adjacent to the company’s headquarters – will be open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily and will seat 108 customers. The restaurant features a glass-enclosed display of bagels being made, starting with a station for the technology that recreates Brooklyn water and moving to stations where the water is chilled to the proper temperature, the dough is mixed, shaped, boiled in Original Brooklyn Water, cooled, seeded and baked. The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. in Delray Beach also assists residents in Hurricane preparedness, offering up to 5 gallons of water free when a boil-water alert is declared.
