Cold, salty-sweet treat awaits those who delay gratification

By Victoria Malmer   |  Dessert, Snacks, Tried and New  |  December 02, 2009

haagen

This is one of those high-calorie items I almost wish I didn’t know about. Häagen-Dazs Reserve Fleur de Sel Caramel bars come three to a box, and each has 270 calories.

Each bar is caramel ice cream, with ribbons of fleur de sel (sea salt) caramel throughout, and the whole bar is dipped in dark chocolate.

When I’m working out, I do extra reps so I can have one of these about once a week. The combination of slightly salty caramel, creamy ice cream and dark chocolate is amazing. Häagen-Dazs also makes fleur de sel caramel ice cream in a tub, which is also excellent, and easier to portion-control.

Available at Winn-Dixie, Publix, and most other major grocery stores.

Try Vemma NEXT for kids’ nutrition fix

By Victoria Malmer   |  Beverages, Health, Kid-friendly meals, Low calorie, Tried and New  |  November 11, 2009

Do you worry about your kids (or yourself) getting enough vitamins and minerals from food? Vemma NEXT is ideal for children 2 to 12.

The orange-flavored natural liquid is designed to meet children’s nutritional needs without preservatives, artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners.

For every month’s supply purchased, Vemma will donate a month’s supply of NEXT to a needy child.

Comes in single serving, 2-ounce bottles and 32-ounce bottles. Available at www.vemma.com.

I use them with frozen fruit to make an extra-healthy smoothie.

Tried and New: Ready-to-serve vegan soups are surprisingly tasty

By Victoria Malmer   |  Low calorie, Soups, Tried and New, Vegan  |  October 20, 2009

Dr. McDougall’s ready-to-serve carton soups are vegan, high in fiber, filling, low calorie, and yet, surprisingly (for me) delicious. I expect foods in those categories to be … palatable, tolerable. These soups are really good. I especially like the vegetable soup, minestrone, and chunky tomato, but all seven varieties are good, and satisfying as a meal. There’s also lentil, black bean, split pea, and roasted red pepper with tomato. Each carton is about 18 oz., two servings, most are complete protein, many are gluten free. Prices vary, but they are available at Whole Foods and online at http://www.rightfoods.com

By Victoria Malmer   |  Dairy, Dessert, Tried and New  |  September 01, 2009

Ben & Jerry’s is symbolically renaming Chubby Hubby to Hubby Hubby, in honor of the fight to legalize gay marriage. This is temporary, a gesture.

Lawry’s marinades add loads of steak house, BBQ taste

By Victoria Malmer   |  Tried and New  |  August 25, 2009

Lawry’s has two new liquid marinades, Signature Steak House and Buffalo BBQ, that add loads of flavor in just 30 minutes. I look for sauces and marinades that don’t have sugar, corn syrup or other sweeteners as the main ingredient, and these don’t.

They have 10 calories in one tablespoon, and are really yummy. The signature steak house tastes of Worcestershire sauce, molasses, cumin and garlic. Read the full story

Bacon lollipop? Try it before you judge

By Victoria Malmer   |  Snacks, Tried and New  |  August 18, 2009

I have a confession. I tried a lollipop recently that tasted like bacon, and I liked it.

The flavor, from Das Foods, is part of a new line of all-natural suckers that come in novel flavors including salty caramel, maple bacon, orange pomegranate and lemon ginger.
