In 1912, the fair was founded by a group of local business leaders, led by W.W. Blackmer, who thought it would be wise to promote the region's top industry, agriculture.
In 1957, Palm Beach County gave the fair 100 acres at its present site, though it later took back 20 acres for the stockade.
Prior to that, the fair was held at John Prince Park outside Lake Worth. But the county needed the land so it could vie for a state university, which ended up being Palm Beach State College.
The fair attracts nearly 500,000 attendees annually.
