You may not have realized it, but there was a record for movie box-office money set over the weekend.
No, New Moon didn’t shatter records for vampire movies. This was a much more undesirable record.
A horror comedy called Transylmaniahas been found to have grossed the least amount of money ever for a film playing at least 1,000 screens, according to Box Office Mojo.
Transylmania, which has no big name stars – though it does have several cast members continuing roles from a pair of National Lampoon movies called Dorm Daze and Dorm Daze 2 (yeah, I don’t remember them either) – pulled in $263,941 at 1,007 screens this past weekend. Read the full story

“No, that’s not a good sign!” says West Palm Beach’s Keri Lurtz, the director and star of Lost Angels: City of Dreams, a most cautionary of cautionary tales about three friends who move to Hollywood seeking fame and fortune, but find drugs, desperation, rejection and other stark realities that lead to bad decisions. Until this week, I had managed to avoid seeing any of the Saw series, which began in 2004, and was hoping to continue that streak. Forever.
But in honor of today’s release of Saw VI, someone in a higher pay grade decided it would be a great time for me to catch up with sadistic mastermind Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) in a 10-hour, five-movie marathon of death and puppets.
So I spent the better part of a weekend trapped in my house watching this psycho and his minions trap various felons, former addicts and harbingers of evil in a series of disgusting locations (abandoned buildings, skeevy bathrooms, skeevy bathrooms in abandoned buildings). Read the full story
The critics have spoken. Here’s what more than a few have to say:
“Scariest movie of the decade.”
“Scariest movie of my life.”
“Scariest movie of our time!”
For Hollywood studio flicks, such raves usually are no more than icing on top of a marketing campaign that cost tens of millions. For “Paranormal Activity,” the raves are the marketing campaign.
The comments above, repeated over and over again in various contexts on Twitter and Facebook — along with other online fan buzz — propelled the micro-budgeted horror movie to a $7.9 million weekend in just 160 theaters. That’s a colossal average of $49,379 a theater, compared with $11,429 in 3,000 theaters for “Couples Retreat,” which debuted as the weekend’s No. 1 movie with $34.3 million.
