Tom Cruise sought the cover of a golf cart, but other stars were more than happy to deal with the click of photographers’ cameras on the set of Rock of Ages, the adaptation of the Tony-winning musical that is currently filming in South Florida.

The set in Fort Lauderdale — which is taking up the Himmarshee Village area, including the Revolution Live rock club — has been the site of controversy between photographers and the city. Photographers were met by signs reading “No trespassing” and warning that photography would be prohibited.

That has been met in turn by lawsuits by both SouthFloridaGayNews.com and the Society of Professional Journalists. According to The Miami Herald‘s Gay South Florida blog, the suit claims that photographers’ constitutional rights were being violated by the ban.

Over the weekend, photographers finally began transmitting photos from the set, thanks in part to a peaceful protest by photographers and supporters.

Julianne Hough, the female lead of the jukebox musical Rock of Ages which is currently filming in and around Miami, looks her ’80s rocker-girl part in jean shorts and cowboy boots during shooting Monday in Hollywood.

Here she’s meeting with director Adam Shankman, whose previous directorial work includes Hairspray and Bringing Down the House.

Hough and Shankman share another quality — both are heavily involved in the world of dance. Hough was a professional partner during the first few seasons of Dancing with the Stars on ABC before jumping away, first to the world of country music, then to acting. Shankman, meanwhile, has also been a professional dancer and choreographer, and has also served as a judge on the FOX show So You Think You Can Dance?

Our first look at ‘Rock of Ages’ actors in costume

By pbpulse.com Staff   |  Musicals, Sightings  |  May 23, 2011

Diego Boneta and Julianne Hough, the male and female leads in the musical Rock of Ages, which is filming around Miami, skate their way down the sidewalk in Hollywood, Fla.

It’s the first time we’ve seen any actors in costume for the film, which is set during the heyday of the 1980s hair-metal era.

Boneta plays Drew Bowie, an aspiring rocker, and Hough plays Sherrie Christian, the girl that Drew falls for. In Hough’s case, her character’s name lends itself to two different ballads during the show — the Steve Perry song “Oh Sherrie”, and the Night Ranger anthem “Sister Christian”.

Local dancer making “Refreshing” splash in online film

By Leslie Gray Streeter   |  Arts and Culture, Ballet, Family films, Movies, Musicals  |  April 23, 2011

Billy Bell isn’t the only local dancer making a splash this weekend. While the “So You Can Think You Can Dance” and Dreyfoos School For The Arts graduate prepares a local show today, Boynton Beach’s Kayla Marzullo prepares to ask America to vote her a winner for a project featuring another “SYTYCD” star.

Kayla, 17, a junior at Park Vista High School, appears in “The Magic Ribbon,” a short film by filmmakers Kristen Genszler and Jacqueline Reyno, an entry in Sprite’s online “Refreshing Films” contest. The 13-minute short follows two young dancers auditioning for a prestigious choreographer played by “SYTYCD” judge and Emmy winner Mia Michaels, and the titular magical hair accessory. Kayla says she heard about the Miami-based shoot from her manager, and got called back the day of her audition. She’s done small student film projects before, but this is her first with national exposure.

“I’ve been dancing since I was three,” explains Kayla, whose mother Stacy was also a dancer and is now a teacher at Southern Dance Theatre in Boynton Beach. She says that she enjoyed meeting Michaels – “She’s super nice, very inspiring. I got to talk to her on a personal level, and she gave us good advice.”

As for the film, it’s competing head to head with “Ceased and Deceased,” made by filmmakers from Los Angeles and starring former “Scrubs” star Donald Faison. And although Kayla would love you to vote for “The Magic Ribbon” – “I think it bring something different, from the producers and directors and all the different dancers” – she’s absolutely complimentary to all the others.

“I like theirs, too!” she gushes. “They’re all good!”

You can find “The Magic Ribbon” from today until May 2 at https://secure.sprite.com/refreshingfilms/film/miami.jsp and text the word “Miami” to 777483.

Travolta thanks Fla. fans for demanding ‘Grease’

By Associated Press   |  Celeb Stalker, Musicals  |  July 02, 2010

John Travolta is thanking his adopted Florida hometown, Ocala, after residents waged an online campaign to bring a limited rerelease of his hit “Grease” to the area.

The 1978 classic is being shown in select theaters nationwide as the “Grease Sing-A-Long,” with karaoke-style subtitles for the songs.

Ocala wasn’t on the distribution list. So residents swamped an online poll that allowed the city with the most voting fans to get the film. Ocala topped the poll by hundreds of votes.

Travolta released a statement through JTP Films thanking residents and promising to buy free snacks.

“Wish I could be there with you,” he said.

Travolta and wife Kelly Preston bought an $8 million home in Ocala in 2003 with a landing strip so Travolta, an avid pilot, can fly.

By Associated Press   |  Music News, Musicals  |  June 22, 2010

A new face in Hollywood is stepping into Kevin Bacon’s shoes for a remake of “Footloose.”

Paramount Pictures announced Tuesday that Kenny Wormald will take on the role Bacon originated in the 1984 original about a rebellious city youth who busts some moves in his new town, where dancing has been banned.

“High School Musical” heartthrob Zac Efron had planned to star but dropped out of the “Footloose” remake last year.

Wormald’s previous credits include the MTV series “Dancelife.” He will co-star alongside two-time “Dancing With the Stars” champion and country music singer Julianne Hough. The cast also includes Dennis Quaid.

Due in theaters April 1, 2011, “Footloose” will be directed by Craig Brewer (“Hustle & Flow”).

Lena Horne’s “Believe In Yourself”: The power of a good performance

Photos: Notable Deaths of 2010

“The Wiz” was not a very good movie, but it was one of the highlights of my tiny girlhood, because it involved singing, dancing and Michael Jackson as a shy scarecrow.

And it featured a glorious cameo by Lena Horne, who  I imagined was the prettiest woman that had ever been born, as Glinda The Good Witch.

As news of the luminous Horne’s passing spreads, you’ll be hearing “Stormy Weather” a lot – and rightly so.

But I just wanted remind you of Horne’s beautiful rendition of “Believe In Yourself,” toward the end of the movie, as an example of how class, grace and power can rescue even the cheesiest of propositions.

See “Believe In Yourself” below.
