Girls' tutus for sale at Expecting You Maternity Consignment.
Motto: “Where Mommies and Babies Stroll Out in Style.” The shop has clothing, toys, furnishings and accessories ranging from crib bedding to bottles, many with designer labels and all in excellent condition. “I’m very selective,” owner Jodi Newberry says. She gives a 60 store-40 consigner percentage split on accepted items.
Her audience: Expecting women who want panache without the high price tag. “Maternity clothing can be expensive,” said Newberry, a Fort Lauderdale native who lives in Lighthouse Point. “A lot of women put away their items until the next time they’re expecting. But by then, it’s out of style.”

Background: When her pregnancy ended at 22 weeks, Newberry said, she was left with boxes of maternity clothing. After several failed attempts to find a local consignment shop, she finally auctioned off the apparel on eBay. The experience gave her the idea for the shop, and she began drafting a business plan three years ago. But, Newberry said, being laid off from her job as a property manager gave her the nudge to embark on her entrepreneurial dream. Expecting You opened in the fall.

Ballerina girl: Expecting You also carries the Fort Lauderdale-based Rockin Mamaz line of ballerina-style tees with color-coordinated tulle tutus for newborns and toddlers, including a hot pink peace symbol-adorned top with pink/black tutu ($35).
Business with a heart: Newberry has made the boutique her headquarters for Christian’s Bears, an outreach effort she began after her son’s death. Plush teddy bears, each with a copy of an inspirational poem she received from a friend, are given to hospitals and doctor offices for women undergoing similar losses or who are waiting to take their preemies home, she said. “I know my son is watching me,” she said. “I wanted to do something that will make him proud.”
