Michael C. Hall was a hit on Six Feet Under, and he’s just scored back-to-back Golden Globe and SAG Awards for playing the title character in Dexter, a medical examiner who moonlights as a vigilante serial killer.
The double win was especially sweet for Hall, who is undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Hall told Parade.com’s Jeanne Wolf that he’s grateful for the support of fans and friends and is looking forward to spilling more blood in the next season of his hit Showtime series. LOS ANGELES — John Lithgow was going to pass on the chance to play serial killer vs. serial killer on Dexter, with an Italian vacation, cruise and his son’s wedding awaiting him.

On the first episode of season 4 Dexter is no longer the sharply attuned, focused and controlled character of previous seasons. The new baby Harrison has completely put a chink in his armor – the demands of family life are taking their toll on the usually unflappable Dexter. The morning scene about fifteen minutes into the episode, mimics the show opener, but is a fumbled and ungraceful version with a tired eyed and yawning Dexter. Does this mean he has lost his edge? Will he let the vigilantly maintained façade fall? These are the questions that worry us as we watch our favorite altruistic serial killer keep up the image at work and home while still trying satisfy his “dark passenger” – his compulsion to kill. Season 4 of Dexter is now upon us and our favorite serial killer is now a family man. He tied the knot with Rita, moved into a bigger family home, and now has a baby boy of his very own flesh and blood.
So what does season 4 have in store for us besides Dexter’s difficult juggling act of satisfying his “dark passenger” with the blood of murderous transgressors and keeping up appearances as a wholesome family man and neighborly home owner? There is a lot going on between the late night predatory habits, ritualistic murder and body disposals, keeping up appearances at work and with his loved ones – he also has diapers to change, late night feedings, and all the associated responsibilities of a new dad and husband.
The season preview reveals that Dexter will have a nemesis that is truly a worthy foe in the character of the Trinity killer played by actor John Lithgow. He plays a really creepy killer who has eluded the law for something like 30 years. He gets his name for killing in threes. Lithgow is no stranger to playing sick and depraved bad guys. He was pretty bad ass in Cliffhanger. Okay, it’s not the best film around but he really played a mean bastard in that. Then there was Raising Cain which was a dud but Lithgow demonstrated his capacity of inhabiting the warped mind of a murderous psychopath.
So it will be shape up to be a tense cat and mouse between Dexter and this seasoned and accomplished murderer. It seems even Dexter admires his adversary’s clean and meticulous murder scene. This will most likely be Dexter’s greatest challenge yet.
