Jane Lynch not sure she wants to host Emmys again

By Associated Press   |  Celeb Stalker, Emmy Awards  |  September 22, 2011

Just days after hosting her first Emmy Awards, actress Jane Lynch says she’s not sure she’d do it again.

Lynch said in an interview Wednesday that if she had to decide now, her answer would be no. But she says she had a great time and hadn’t felt “that creative and alive in a long time.”

Her Emmy performance Sunday received mixed reviews.

The actress is promoting her new memoir, “Happy Accidents,” and “Glee.” Lynch plays glee-club-hating cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester on the hit Fox series, which premiered its third season Tuesday.

Lynch says she’s looking forward to spending time with her family now that the Emmys are over. She married Lara Embry last year and is stepmother to Embry’s 9-year-old daughter, Haden.

Nielsen says 12.4 million viewers for Emmys

By Associated Press   |  Celeb Stalker, Emmy Awards, ratings  |  September 19, 2011

Television networks must hope interest in the Emmy Awards is not a sign of things to come.

Nielsen said Monday that the annual ceremony honoring the best in TV was seen by 12.4 million viewers on Fox Sunday night. That’s about a million fewer viewers than watched each of the last two years. The Emmys’ look backward at memorable work also serves as the kickoff to a new TV season.

Competition was tough, with an NFL game getting 21.5 million viewers.

The digital recorder company TiVo says Charlie Sheen’s presentation of the best comic actor award was the moment most played back and watched on recorders.

30 Rock star Alec Baldwin took to his Twitter account hours before the opening of The Emmy Awards to let fans know that FOX had removed a joke he made about the News Corp phone hacking scandal from the show’s opening sketch.

Baldwin tweeted that, “Fox did kill my NewsCorp hacking joke. Which sucks bc I think it would have made them look better. A little.” He added, “I understand News Corp killing that joke.”

According to Deadline Hollywood, which first reported the change to Sunday’s opening sketch, Baldwin asked FOX to remove him from the skit entirely after learning that the phone hacking joke had been removed. FOX in turn replaced Baldwin with Leonard Nimoy, who Deadline reports re-filmed the skit, minus the joke.

The News Corp scandal dominated the media world earlier this year following revelations that The News of the World hacked into the voicemail of a missing girl in the UK, giving the family false hope that she was still alive. That case resulted in the closure of the tabloid paper, News Corp dropping its bid for BSkyB and ongoing investigations into the reporting practices of the media giant.

Stars rake in the swag as Emmy gift suites abound

Emmy nominees are always talented, and in the days leading up to the awards ceremony many are gifted, too.

Gift suites catering to Emmy nominees and presenters beckoned the stars, writers and producers of TV’s top shows Saturday with loads of luxury freebies.

The stars who came by the Nokia Theatre to rehearse for Sunday’s ceremony were invited backstage to the HP Touchsmart Gift Lounge, where HP gave away notebook computers and made a donation to the TV academy’s nonprofit foundation for each celeb who stopped by.

Actor David Boreanaz of TV’s “Bones” came to the suite with his family in the morning and was among the stars who collected bedazzled toasters, sneakers made from recycled plastic water bottles, designer sunglasses, Centrum vitamins, Nautica watches and a $700 hair dryer.

At the Four Seasons Hotel across town, the HBO Luxury Lounge was a crowded, multi-room affair that drew LL Cool J, Loretta Devine, who won an Emmy for her guest-starring role on “Grey’s Anatomy,” ”Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner and veteran actress Cloris Leachman, among others.

Guests could retreat to a mini spa, where L’Oreal provided manicures, makeovers, hairdos and hot shaves. They could sip cocktails inspired by HBO shows such as “True Blood” and “Boardwalk Empire” in the Klipsch listening lounge; and they could gather lots of goodies, from handbags to headphones to high-end baby strollers.

Carell, Hamm, Laurie: Emmy bridesmaids yet again?

By Associated Press   |  Emmy Awards, TV  |  September 13, 2011

It’s hard to picture TV stars such as Steve Carell, Jon Hamm and Hugh Laurie as perennial bridesmaids. But that’s what they’ve been in recent years at Emmy time, as rival nominees hog the golden statuettes.

Will any of the threesome shed his bridesmaid status this year? That question is on Emmy-watchers’ minds as awards night draws near. (The big show airs Sunday at 8 p.m. EDT on Fox).

— Here’s Carell, nominated as outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for his fifth and final year starring on “The Office” — and already snubbed four years running.

— Here’s Hamm, who has seen his series, “Mad Men,” reap best-drama Emmys all three of its seasons while best-actor nominee Hamm got shut out.

— And up against Hamm, here’s Hugh Laurie, a six-time nominee (and, up to now, annual washout) on the medical drama “House,” about to start its last season.

Emmy nominee Martindale goes from hunk to hunk

By Associated Press   |  Emmy Awards, TV  |  September 13, 2011

By MIKE CIDONI LENNOX

If any new role last TV season screamed “Emmy!” it was nominated actress Margo Martindale’s Mags Bennett on the FX crime drama “Justified.”

On one hand, Mags was an apple-pie baking mama with unconditional love for her children. On the other, she was perhaps the most menacing, maniacal mob matriarch to come along this side of the late Nancy Marchand’s legendary twisted sister, Livia Soprano.

Yet Mags wasn’t really a stretch for veteran Martindale (“Million Dollar Baby,” ”Secretariat”), a Tony-nominated character actress who mostly has played parts like her true self: a sweet Southern gal with a touch of class — and sass.

“(Mags) came so easily to me that it was scary,” noted Martindale in a recent interview. “It fit me like a glove. I felt at home, like a child again. Now, that sounds insane. But it felt like play-acting in my backyard: cowboys and Indians, you know?”

“Boardwalk Empire” captured a leading seven trophies at the creative arts Emmy Awards, with Gwyneth Paltrow and Justin Timberlake earning TV comedy series guest-star honors.

Paltrow, recognized for “Glee,” and Timberlake, a winner for hosting “Saturday Night Live,” were no-shows at Saturday’s ceremony for technical and other achievements. It preceded the main Sept. 18 Emmy show.

“She couldn’t be here because it’s happy hour at the Starlight Room,” presenter and “Community” actress Alison Brie joked about Paltrow’s absence.

Timberlake received his award for hosting a “Saturday Night Live” episode and shared in another Emmy for co-writing his opening monologue, in which he crooned about not wanting to sing.

“Justin Timberlake really wanted to be here but we said no, they want to see the writers,” ”SNL” head writer Seth Myers told the audience.

Some of TV’s top stars aren’t just nominated for Emmy Awards; they’re going to help present them.

The television academy says Emmy nominees Amy Poehler, Will Arnett, Sofia Vergara and Julianna Margulies will help hand out awards at the Sept. 18 ceremony.

Poehler is a double nominee, as lead actress and producer of the comedy series “Parks and Recreation.” Her husband, Arnett, is up for guest actor in a comedy for “30 Rock.” Vergara is nominated for supporting actress in a comedy for “Modern Family,” and Margulies is up again for an award she won last year: Lead actress in a drama series for “The Good Wife.”

New “Two and a Half Men” star Ashton Kutcher and Zooey Deschanel, star of the new series “New Girl,” will also present Emmys.

‘Treme,’ a winning show, suffers Emmy neglect

By Associated Press   |  Emmy Awards, TV  |  July 15, 2011

By FRAZIER MOORE

Problem solved?

It would’ve been embarrassing to overlook Melissa Leo when handing out the Emmy nominations this year. After all, just five months ago, she won herself an Oscar. So on Thursday, she got a well-deserved nod for the HBO miniseries “Mildred Pierce.”

That got Emmy voters off the hook. In the process, it spared them the burden of examining Leo’s work in “Treme,” the HBO drama series of which she is one of many Emmy-worthy cast members.

Leo was probably the best shot “Treme” had at recognition. But, instead of landing even one nomination — for acting, writing or anything else — the series got the back of Emmy’s hand.

What a shame. “Treme” is easily among the best drama series on the air, and takes a backseat to no show for the breadth and excellence of its cast. One more thing that makes “Treme” praiseworthy: its uniqueness.
