Tommy’s haunting continues in ‘Rescue Me’ finale

By Rick Ingebritson   |  Rescue Me  |  September 01, 2010

Ladder 62 does its best to adjust to life after Damian's accident.

Jimmy and Connor, meet Damian. The latest ghost to move into Tommy Gavin’s ever-growing neighborhood.

But, in a twist, unlike his late cousin and son, Tommy’s godson is very much alive. Physically, at least.

An uneven sixth season of “Rescue Me” came to a shocking finale, with the revelation that Damian hadn’t, in fact, died from his injuries suffered in a warehouse fire, as last week’s episode led us to believe.

Damian is alive, which in Tommy’s world, just might be even worse than the alternative.

“A.D.D.” opens with a grieving Sheila seemingly entombed in her bedroom, receiving counseling over the phone. She says she blames herself and also blames her son. She even blames “the stupid baby” her son rescued a week before the accident.

After repeating the mantra “It’s not my fault” three times, she exhales, thanks her therapist and hangs up. Read the full story

‘Rescue Me’ says goodbye to a crew member?

By Rick Ingebritson   |  Rescue Me  |  August 25, 2010

Damian struggles with his future on the FDNY.

Spoiler alert: If you haven’t watched this week’s “Rescue Me,” or if you’re one of those weirdos who don’t watch the next week’s preview, you probably should stop right here.

Is it the young punk?

Or is it the old fart?

Is it both?

Is it neither?

It’s kind of hard to tell after watching the latest episode of “Rescue Me.” If next week’s preview is to be trusted, however, it appears that Young Dude Damian met his untimely demise while Old Dude Lou survived. In the preview, Lou is seen talking to his doctor about having “just lost a guy on our crew; a young kid.”

Of course, this is “Rescue Me,” which has a propensity toward having ghosts running around the place, so maybe Lou, in fact, is dead.

Now I’m starting to confuse myself … Read the full story

Ladder 62 survives, Tommy doesn’t on “Rescue Me”

By Rick Ingebritson   |  Rescue Me  |  August 18, 2010

Chief Feinberg and Franco are back to work after the reopening of their house.

Tommy just couldn’t well enough alone.

One of the traits that makes Tommy Gavin a great firefighter is his stubbornness. Told the fire is too great and people can’t be saved, he rushes back into the flames and emerges the hero, time after time.

Told he can’t be a functioning alcoholic, he continues to be a lush (with the occasional break) while maintaining his hero role at the firehouse.

Told by Sheila that their sex life had been mediocre at best and that his cousin (a former priest, for cripe’s sake!) was a better kisser? Well, Tommy wasn’t going to stand for it, so he stubbornly proved his point and most likely blew his final attempt at a normal family life with his wife and kids.

“Cowboy” opens with Janet waking up after her and Tommy’s, um, “reunion,” to find her husband cooking breakfast. If you can count burnt toast, burnt eggs and bad coffee breakfast … Read the full story

Tommy and Janet try to save each other on “Rescue Me”

By Rick Ingebritson   |  Rescue Me  |  August 11, 2010

Lou, Tommy and Shawn deal with the fallout of their house closure.

Through tragedy, betrayal and heartbreak, Tommy and Janet somehow have remain connected.

It’s a connection tenuous at best, but when you’ve suffered the losses they have, you reach out for something — or someone — comforting.

Through the six years of “Rescue Me,” I’ve always pulled for Tommy and Janet to somehow find a way to stay together. They bring out the best (and worst) in each other and often lead to the best moments the show has to offer.

“Forgiven” opens with Tommy in the pokey, locked up for assaulting his daughter in a church, an desperate decision that may just have saved her. Read the full story

No sanctuary for the wicked on “Rescue Me”

By Rick Ingebritson   |  Rescue Me  |  August 04, 2010

Tommy continues to try to help his daughter.

Only Tommy Gavin could find a way to combine an intervention with a baptism and an exorcism.

In the latest episode, the writers of “Rescue Me” once again test the boundaries of common decency, sacrilege and good taste. And that’s not necessarily meant as a criticism.

“Sanctuary” opens with the recently sober Tommy telling Janet that his head is clear as a bell and he can “remember everything I said and did last night. It sucks.” Read the full story

Heaven and hell on “Rescue Me”

Crew members hatch a plan to break Lou out of a hospital on ‘Rescue Me.’

Crew members hatch a plan to break Lou out of a hospital on ‘Rescue Me.’

The smell of a bakery and the loving touch of a mother vs. zombies and eternal suffering.

The near-death experiences of Lou and Tommy couldn’t be more different and it’s understandable while one looks forward to one day returning, the other is doing everything he can to change his damned destiny.

“Breakout” opens with the boys of Ladder 62 in a hospital waiting room, anxiously awaiting word of Lou’s condition after he suffered a heart attack. In the best line of the show, Needles says “six hours and not one morsel of information about what’s going on. It’s like an episode of ‘Lost,’ only our fat guy might die.” Read the full story

“Rescue Me” refuses to age gracefully

Larenz Tate (left) and Steven Pasquale are left exhausted on ‘Rescue Me.’

While Tommy faced his own mortality and refused to back down, Lou ended up facedown at the end of “Rescue Me.”

“Comeback” opens with Tommy pouring booze down the kitchen sink. Janet helpfully brings out bottles of wine and Tommy scoffs at her, saying that wine isn’t booze — it’s just grape juice with a kick.

Lush daughter Colleen enters and asks her father a very important question: “What’s better with Cheerios, white or red?”

Driving to work, Tommy calls and quizzes Damian on what his buddies have planned for him on his first day back. He instructs him to take down the banners, but, by all means, keep the strippers around until he gets there. Tommy enters to a belching contest, but, alas, no strippers.

With a firehouse on the mayor’s chopping block, 62 Truck races the West Side Wildmen to a call, which turns out to be a heroin OD. Tommy deflects Wildmen barbs by saying “I’m rubber and your glue,” and later uses the always-effective “whatever.” Read the full story

Change doesn’t come easily on “Rescue Me”

By Rick Ingebritson   |  Rescue Me  |  July 07, 2010
Tommy and Janet continue to try to work through their problems on 'Rescue Me.'

Tommy and Janet continue to try to work through their problems on 'Rescue Me.'

No one believes Tommy Gavin and, really, who can blame them?

This is the guy who last week raced out of a hospital with a bag of drugs and later drank and smoke while sitting next to a church altar.

On “Change,” our favorite boozing, skirt-chasing, chain-smoking firefighter announces he is giving up drinking, eliciting belly laughs from his housemates.

He arrives home to find his daughter, Katie, talking to a shirtless Franco. In walks a shirtless Shawn and Tommy isn’t pleased with the impromptu Chippendales gathering in his kitchen. He asks his co-workers to wear shirts when they are in his house because he doesn’t want Katie to “see their stuff.” Read the full story

Sixth season of “Rescue Me” gets off to hot start

By Rick Ingebritson   |  Rescue Me  |  June 30, 2010
Tommy Gavin is haunted by visions on 'Rescue Me."

Tommy Gavin is haunted by visions on 'Rescue Me."

Typically, when someone has a near-death experience, he or she is surrounded by the loving embrace of family and friends.

And when that person is released from the hospital, he or she usually is pushed in a wheelchair to the parking lot, where they are picked up and taken home to their thankful family.

Not Tommy Gavin.week before his scheduled release, Tommy is met by friends and family who, for the most part, would just as soon have seen him die than have to continue to deal with his unending drama.

Welcome home, Tommy! Read the full story
