NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Jackson didn’t want to be just a superstar. Like the Beatles, he wanted to be the biggest, the undisputed king. He wanted to topple the reigning man with the crown, Elvis.
In the end, Jackson came to resemble Elvis in both the best and worst ways – supremely gifted and successful but also self-destructive and beset by demons. And like Elvis, he died way too young.
“It’s just so weird. He even married Elvis’ daughter,” said author-music critic Greil Marcus, who wrote at length about Presley in his acclaimed cultural history, “Mystery Train.”
Elvis Presley died a bloated middle-age man after overdosing on prescription drugs at home in 1977 at age 42. Jackson died Thursday at age 50 after being rushed from his Los Angeles home to UCLA Medical Center.
While endless fame seemed to inflate Elvis like helium, Jackson’s fame seemed to scrub away the flesh from his bones.
Like Elvis, Jackson was once beautiful, outrageous, a revolutionary without politics who shook down the walls between black and white. He had the hits, the style, the ego, the talent.
He was the “King of Pop,” and he needed only to fill in the life: He married Elvis’ daughter. He bought the rights to some of Elvis’ songs. Elvis owned Graceland, its name a symbol for a deliverance the singer prayed for until the end of his life.
Jackson had Neverland, a fantasy for a man-child for whom money provided the chance to live in a world of his own.
He did, and did not, want to be like Elvis. In “Moon Walk,” a memoir published in 1988, Jackson insisted Elvis was not important to him growing up and that he was unhappy to learn a song he recorded with his brothers, “Heartbreak Hotel,” shared the name of Presley’s first national hit.
“I swear that was a phrase that came out of my head, and I wasn’t thinking of any other song when I wrote it,” he wrote. “The record company printed it on the cover as ‘This Place Hotel,’ because of the Elvis Presley connection.
“As important as he was to music, black as well as white, he just wasn’t an influence on me. I guess he was too early for me. Maybe it was timing more than anything else.
“By the time our song had come out, people thought that if I kept living in seclusion the way I was, I might die the way he did. The parallels aren’t there as far as I’m concerned, and I was never much for scare tactics. Still, the way Elvis destroyed himself interests me, because I don’t ever want to walk those grounds myself.”

When Elvis came on the scene, no one had ever heard or seen anything like him. We were kids and couldn’t wait to see him wiggle his bottom but sadly, Ed Sullivan blanked that out and left us wanting. Following his footsteps came Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. Who could say they weren’t some of the best entertainers. They wiggled and set fire long before Michael found his crouch. Yes, by the time Michael came along, censorship was out and fondling one’s privates was in, and he was certainly a terrific entertainer. Cute as a button when a child, he grew into something horrible and sad. I don’t think he ever could measure up to Elvis singing Blue Christmas.

Michael probably won’t live up to Elvis’s legacy but then again they were both amazing performers.Red ur right Elvis should have grown up a little and taken control over his life. While Priscilla was young when they met in Germany(14)..they did marry once she became of age and back then many girls married at the age of 17 or 18.
MJ was not a sexual predator!! he was a kid who didnt get to have a childhood. he was working since he was 5…now…how many times do you think he got to go outside and play. if you look at his interviews as a child…he was very sad off the stage, always talking about how he wish he could be like other kids and play and just have fun. i think that when he got older, he found himself in a position to help kids and also to help himself to be a kid again and do the things he never got to do. in his eyes, he was doing nothing wrong…to society, i could see how it could seem a bit odd. and…the parents of the kids settled out of court for like 20 million…ok…im a parent…and if someone hurt my child, NO amount of money would replace seeing that person going to jail and paying for hurting my child…i guess you or any regular person will never know what thats like…to grow up and not be able to walk across the street without being mobbed by fans…to not to be able to go to the ice cream truck…we will never know what michael endured in order to become the GREATEST ENTERTAINER THAT EVER LIVED!! like 2 times over…there will never be another star, past or present that will reach his worldwide status. he didnt put his music in a box! and for that….the world thanks him!! Why do these people insist on comparing the two? Michael was nothing like Elvis…unless he purposely imitated him. The second statement that like Elvis, Jackson was once beautiful is true but for vastly different reasons. Jackson set out to change his features and became monstrous! Elvis suffered from illness and was distraught over the loss of his marriage. But Elvis maintained his good looks and never sought to mar his face like Jackson did. And the third quote, that Elvis overdosed has NEVER been proven. There was no proof at all that he actually overdosed. The official autopsy report listed cardiac arrest.
Michael Jackson was once a lovely, young man with unparalled talent. He had his own style and a unique voice. Elvis bridged the gap between the races and the genres and introduced the world to Rock and Roll. Michael copied his dance move, standing up on his toes, from Elvis. So the fact that MJ said that Elvis never influenced him is stupid and a complete lie. MJ owned the rights to some of Elvis’ songs and even married his daughter. And while Elvis may have been a controversial entertainer in the 50’s and 60’s, he never stooped to the levels that Michael did. Elvis’ public record remained unblemished. MJ on the other hand was accused of horrible acts against children and was so brazen as to dangle his own child from a hotel balcony! They are nothing alike.

Jerry, Michael has always stated that he was proud to be black. We are the ones that never left him. When the white media called him “wacko jacko,” we stuck by him. He could not help his condition. It has been well documented. It’s just like Jamie Foxx said, we love all the different Michaels. I can’t stand the white media trying to brainwash us. Think. I am a Michael Jackson fan & My heart is saddened at his sudden death. When my daughter was young she & I would play his ALBUMS over & over as well as Elvis;, of course, she is also a devoute Elvis fan.
Both men united people all over the world and Elvis’ legacy continues to do so 32 years after his death.
