So where are you going to watch the big game?

With dozens of sports bars in our area, the choice is never easy. Are you looking for a place with TVs galore? Or one with the best wings in town?

With that in mind, I surveyed some new or noteworthy places on the sports bar map, noting what makes each special in its own way. I also asked about each bar’s plans for Super Bowl Sunday.

Enjoy the game!

Duffy’s

Numerous locations throughout Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast; www.duffysmvp.com

The vibe: For a growing chain, Duffy’s retains a nice neighborhood feel at each of its locations, even though the restaurants can get very busy. Lots of TVs and lots of sports memorabilia on the walls add to the sense of game-day fun.

The food: Duffy’s has enough ambitions to qualify as a real restaurant — the menu incorporates everything from steaks to pasta to a decorate-your-own cupcakes dessert. That said, if you’re used to steakhouse-quality beef, I wouldn’t make a point of ordering a steak here. But Duffy’s does the classics — burgers and wings — proud justice.

The service: Thoroughly professional. When a mistake occurs, it’s usually corrected right away.

Must-have menu item: The recently introduced coconut-crusted dolphin fingers are out of this world — like a cross between chicken fingers and coconut shrimp!

Super Bowl specials: Now here’s a deal: All entrees are $9.95 throughout the day (that includes everything from broiled scallops to baby back ribs). The two-for-one Happy Hour drink special has been extended all day, too.

Corners Ocean Bar & Grill

71 E. Indiantown Road, Jupiter; (561) 747-1161; jupitercorners.com

The vibe: It’s a huge place, with an outdoor bar area as well. The idea is to replicate the beach-party feel of the Jupiter of yesteryear. I’d say they’re hitting the mark. (And, yes, there are TVs for watching the game.)

The food: Another place that happily thinks beyond burgers and wings. They do a lot of fun, tropical-minded dishes, including a sweet potato and macadamia-encrusted grouper. And there’s a killer ice cream cake on the dessert menu.

The service: Generally engaging, but servers need to be mindful of clearing the tables between courses.

Must-have menu item: The prime rib — at $14 for a huge slab of beef, it’s one of the best deals in town.

Super Bowl specials: The restaurant runs regular food and drink deals during sports events.

Kirby’s Pub, Grille & Raw Bar

841 Donald Ross Road (in Plaza La Mer), Juno Beach; (561) 627-8000; kirbyspub.com

The vibe: Another cavernous place that puts as much emphasis on fun as food. There are TVs, pool tables, video games and more. Because of the ownership’s Maryland connections, the restaurant is a popular spot for catching Baltimore Ravens games during the regular season.

The food: Lots of seafood here — again, it’s a Maryland thing (and more on Kirby’s crab cake below). They also turn out a first-rate house-made potato chips.

The service: Casual but efficient. They’re also quite accommodating at the bar.

Must-have menu item: The crab cake, naturally. It’s made the classic Maryland way — lots of meat, little filler and just a hint of seasonings.

Super Bowl specials: Food and drink specials galore, including a $6 crab dip, $6 pizzas and $9.99 wings-and-pitcher of beer package.

Hurricane Grill & Wings

Numerous locations throughout Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast; hurricanewings.com

The vibe: Most of the locations we’ve visited are on the small side — good for a more intimate game-day gathering, but perhaps not the place for a big-time party.

The food: It’s a tighter menu than many of the ambitious sports bars in our area, but Hurricane knows what they’re doing. The wings come in more than two dozen varieties, from the traditional (mild, barbecue, etc.) to the outrageous (raspberry and horseradish, bourbon apple, etc.). But other options include decent burgers and outstanding natural-cut fries.

The service: Friendly and generally spot-on. But keep in mind: This ain’t The Breakers.

Must-have menu item: The wings, of course. My favorite variety: the maple pepper — like a cross between a wing and a breakfast sandwich.

Super Bowl specials: Varies by location, but each will be offering deals on drinks and food.

Rooney’s All-In Sports Bar & Grille

6901 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach; (561) 833-7802; rooneysallin.com

The vibe: If your sports bar experience is all about the TV, this is the place to go — they’ve got a whole wall of them, meaning you can watch several events at once. And the banquettes let you sit back and enjoy the game in style. Oh, and if you’re a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, this is where you want to be during the NFL season — the Rooney family owns the team!

The food: A straightforward menu that puts a premium on what could be called sports bar comfort food — lots of solid fried fare on the list of appetizers (and the wings are impressively large), lots of sandwiches, sliders and burgers on the rest of the menu. And I love the Bananas Foster Bites for dessert. That said, choose carefully: The flat-bread pizzas — more like a soggy cracker with a pile of gummy cheese — should definitely be avoided.

The service: Problematic. On two recent visits, it was often hard tracking someone down to answer questions or get the check.

Must-have menu item: Beer Battered Steeler ’Shrooms — perhaps the best version of fried mushrooms I’ve ever had. (And hey, it’s a great way to get some veggies in your diet.)

Super Bowl specials: Rooney’s is throwing what it calls an “All-In Super Bowl Party,” with prizes, giveaways, an appearance by a high-school band and drink and food packages with souvenir glasses.

  1. How do you ommit Quarterdeck and their $5 Super Bowl special dinners? The ads for this promotion have been running in your paper for weeks!

  2. One of the favorites in South Palm Beach County & Broward, Good food, lots of TVs, drink specials and owned by a retired Miami Dolphin, #59 Bru’s Room

  3. Josh Smith says:

I can only assume that Bostons on the Beach having been around for 30 years on the Ocean (in delray beach by the way),the Sports bar that hosted a huge Pro Bowl street party on A1A last week…. with the best 10 oz Angus Burgers, huge wings,Fried whole clams, etc etc isn’t worthy of a mention either….

  4. Jack says:

In north part of the county, Corners is a really great place to catch a game. It does have a beach theme but they seem very sports minded. The regulars you will meet watching the game is usually more entertaining than the game playing on tv. Plus there venue of live entertainment, and DJ sound system make it a very different sports bar. They also have strip trivia with local bikini models on monday night football, crazy good time!!!

  5. Connie Hanson says:

Have you ever been to Miller’s Garden Ale House? Great food, portions and lots of TVs all around to enjoy the game. I never even heard of some of the places you mentioned. The ones I did know, I agree with.

  6. Dana says:

I agree that Bru’s Room is the best…great food and drink specials and the grilled wings are out of this world!

  7. Ralph says:

  8. Tom Sparts says:

We’re taking our Superbowl party out to sea on Palm Beach Princess. Great food and free drinks plus the only ‘bar’ with a sportbook!
And if the game goes south, plenty of other games to play.
This is our third year – becoming a tradition for us. Enjoy the game

Good time to be held by all at these fining dining experiences on Super Bowl game day. Especially as the crowds will be cheering the COLTS on to victory. Colts Coach Caldwell is an exceptional fine leader and the Colts team is comprised of very fine men, a class act. GO COLTS!

  15. Denise says:

Average Joe’s in Jupiter – Indiantown Road. They have a HUGE projection screen that drops down over the stage and it’s a smoking bar if you’re into that!

  16. NativeOne says:

I’ll be at the Waterway Cafe watching TV’s on the Intracoastal with an incredible menu.

  17. GottaEat says:

You couldn’t have forgotten Foster’s Grille in Royal Palm Beach. They have the Best Burgers in town. Hands down. Also i talked to the manager and he told me their wing prices were to lowest in town. I called around and he was right. I ended up getting 100 and loved every one of them. And BTW Hurricanes Grill and Wings uses frozen fries.
