UPDATED to correct information about coffee.

Just in case you weren’t in the loop, today is National Coffee Day!

According to Coffee History, legend has it that coffee was discovered by goats! An Arabian shepherd noticed his goats dancing joyously after eating “bright red cherries” (actually, coffee beans) — he tried the bean itself, saw what they were so happy about, shared this information with monks and coffee was born!

(Technically, that’s more than likely not even close to true — according to National Geographic, coffee appears to have made its way from Ethiopia to Arabia in 800 A.D., but that it never made its way outside that part of the world until the 1600s.)

Enough of the history lesson! Go get yourself a cup o’ Joe, and enjoy some giveaways:

Barnie’s Coffee & Tea Co. is offering free coffee today.

Select Dunkin Donuts are giving away free coffee today. Check online for participating store locations.

Boca Java, an online coffee retailer is offering free shipping today.

Keep your eye out on Facebook and use the hashtag #coffee on Twitter, as most retailers are promoting freebies online.

If the goats were eating cocoa beans, they discovered hot chocolate not coffee. After he shared this information with monks, Starbucks was born!
