Enzyme-rich papaya adds a layer of delicious tropical flavor to Holly Lee's morning smoothie.

Hi Liz,

I always enjoy reading the food section and particularly appreciate any healthy and low-fat menu items.

You recently asked readers to share their favorite energizing food tips/recipes.

The smoothie that jump-starts my day is really simple to make (recipe below).

It’s fast and easy and tastes delicious.

After my workout, I eat my own version of oatmeal (recipe below).

Thanks for your consideration!

Dear Holly,

Thanks for sharing your “jump-start” and post-workout recipes with us. I love the addition of fresh papaya in a morning smoothie!

One of my favorite breakfasts is a dish of sliced fresh papaya with a spritz of lime. If I’m in the mood, I’ll add a drizzle of honey or agave syrup. (Those ingredients with a little chilled water make a terrific smoothie as well.)

Good health to you!

Liz

‘Hit the Gym’ Smoothie

1/2 cup cranberry juice (no sugar added)

1/4 cup fresh strawberries or blueberries

1/4 cup fresh papaya

Handful red seedless grapes

Put all ingredients in Magic Bullet and blend. (You can add more juice if desired.)

Rewarding Oatmeal

Once water boils, add oats, wheat germ and flax seed. Stir and reduce heat to medium-low. Add nuts, cranberries and raisins. Stir and add cinnamon. Turn heat off and let sit a few minutes.

Spoon into bowl and serve with almond or soy milk. Really satisfying and filled with vitamins!

3/4 cup water, boiled on stove top

3 tablespoons old-fashioned oats

1 tablespoon wheat germ

1 tablespoon walnuts or pecans (broken into pieces)

1 teaspoon raisins (or more — to taste)

1 tablespoon cranberries (optional)

1 tablespoon flax seed

1 teaspoon cinnamon
