The Palm Beach Post
By Jonathan Tully   |  Dining, Taking Your Pulse  |  February 13, 2012

When we did our first do-over for Taking Your Pulse, the winner — for favorite local movie theater — changed.

Not so for favorite barbecue — Park Avenue BBQ still reigns in Palm Beach County.

The chain picked up 39.6 percent of the vote to win the poll. Last year, in our first ever Taking Your Pulse poll, PA also won, but where we had 33 votes last year, this time around, we had more than 850.

Mrs. Smokey’s in Lake Park, which wasn’t open when we did this the first time around, was in second at 13.4 percent, while McCray’s Backyard BBQ in Boynton Beach was in third at 13.1.

Rounding out the top five were Sonny’s (4.3 percent), a chain, and Smokey Bones (4.2 percent), which has a location in Wellington.

Among our write-ins, Ray’s BBQ in Lake Worth was our top fan favorite, along with Mississippi Sweets and Flanigan’s.

not even close, what can I say there is a reason PA BBQ wins these polls. Too everyone else thanks for playing the game.

It is amazing that Park avenue employees are so arrogant given the horrible product that they peddle to the unfortunate public here in south Florida. The only reason you did win is because you have what 8 locations and could probably beat out every other BBQ restaurant just by having your employees vote for you. I am so sick of hearing about PA. Your food is horrible. Do you even smoke your meat ? No you don’t . So don’t gloat about this win.

You seem awfully upset about the outcome of this poll. The people have spoken and PA wins again! Sorry you are so mad though! perhaps you should come in for some fresh smoked back ribs to calm you down a tad.

And for the record, I dont think you can open 9 stores by selling a bad product. You are obviously the expert on the matter though.

I’ve been eating at PA since 99 and LOVE their food!…which is why I voted for them everyday! You must be an owner of the competition that couldn’t keep up with PA. And for the record…they have 9 stores…which means a couple hundred more votes from their loyal fans. And why do they have 9 stores? Because they’re that good they keep expanding. Sick of PA now? Wait til they out grow Palm Beach and dominate all of Florida! GO PARK AVENUE! YOU HAVE THE BEST RIBS! Gloat and enjoy your jealous haters!!!

You want a real competition that actually has some validity and not just a bunch of PA employees voting? You do a blind judging with them against some of the others on the list and I guarantee they would lose.

PA ribs are pretty good, but Mrs. Smokey’s food is much better overall. The brisket at Mrs. Smokey’s is really good. They use it in their chili (which won the NPB Chili cookoff a few weeks ago). On a per-store basis, they got many more votes than any other entry. Plus, it is nice to see a family run business where the owner is right there behind the counter. PA makes okay food, but I would not call their pork or beef “Barbeque”. I think people should give Mrs. Smokey’s a try and I believe many (if not most) would agree that the food is much better than PA. McCray’s has a good loyal following and a distinct flavor / style, so I say well done to them also.
