Haunted attractions offer early Halloween treat

There really should be one of those reality shows for the phenomenon “When Halloween Candy Fails”.

Circus peanuts -- a prime example of a 'Halloween candy fail'.

Circus peanuts -- a prime example of a 'Halloween candy fail'.

Most neighborhoods’ homes seem to get the idea — fun-sized Snickers, M&M’s, etc. You can’t go wrong with the most popular candy out there.

And yet there are always those houses that you or your kids go to, and you come away with a bizarre piece of candy or something and a similar look on your face.

You’re left to wonder: “I dressed (or I dressed my kid) like a pirate (or vampire or Spider-Man) for this?!”

Like, for example, circus peanuts (at right). Or candy corn. Or… well… you get the idea.

For me, the worst piece of Halloween candy ever — I can’t even remember the brand name. All I know is that it was a taffy-like chewy thing that may have tasted like peanut butter. Except it didn’t. Basically it tasted like gross.

(UPDATE: They are called Mary Janes … thanks to Bill Zimmerman on Facebook for the assist.)

What’s your least favorite piece of Halloween candy? What’s the one thing that — when you got the haul home and you were sorting it out — you took one look at it and thought, “Seriously? Someone gave me THIS?!”

Let me know — we’ll have some of your answers in an upcoming post here at pbpulse.com/halloween.

  1. SMF says:

Those Necco wafers were the worst. They were so chalky and nasty. It was like eating a bunch of tums without the benefits. Gross! Is Necco out of business now? They should be for subjecting children to this abomination.

  2. Jonathan Tully says:

    Bad news, SMF:

  3. Joy says:

Candy corn! I always hated candy corn. And back when I was a kid, they’d just throw handfuls of loose candy corn into my plastic pumpkin. Who knows where that candy corn had been?

Pretty much anything that wasn’t chocolate got tossed by me. Except Blow-Pops. Those were awesome.

  4. Stone says:

  11. Kevin says:

The picture above is of candy called Circus Peanuts. Mary Janes are a peanut butter and molasses blend flavored taffy

    • Jonathan Tully says:

Oh I know those are circus peanuts, Kevin, trust me. Those are universally disliked.

I have a PARTICULAR hatred for Mary Janes…

      • Jonathan Tully says:

BTW, I changed out a few things to clear up the confusion — Kevin was right, it looked like I was saying that Circus Peanuts were called Mary Janes. Those two are VERY dissimilar.

Thanks, Kevin. You’ve clearly had your coffee. Or your coffee-flavored Brach’s candies.

  12. Diana says:

  17. Sabe Citizen says:

Mary Janes are one of my favorite. You must be on crack if you don’t like them. I do think we can all agree that the circus peanuts are pretty gross though. When I was a kid I always thought the chocolate was pretty over rated.

  18. Miss Fr3sh says:

Tootsie Rolls and hard candy, especially Jolly Ranchers. Also, Good N Plenty, because black licorice is just nasty. Candy corn, however, I *LOVE*.
