They say that the first step is admitting the problem. But what if you don’t really mind the problem? What if you like the problem?
When I really think about it, I don’t have a problem with hoarding wine. It is my fiancé’s dislike of wine hoarding that is the real problem.
It is because of him that I’ve hidden bottles of Bordeaux in my pajamas drawer. The blame for my lack of T-shirt space falls squarely on his shoulders. Don’t get me wrong, the man likes to drink wine. We just don’t agree on how much of one’s salary should go toward Swirl Girls “research.”
How can he expect me to leave that bottle of 2005 St. Estéphe on the shelf in the store? The one that was whispering, “Take me home… yes, you lady with the hoarding ways… I’ll keep for years stashed in your sock drawer…”
I mean, how many pairs of socks does one girl need, anyway?
I’ve realized I can get away with pulling out one bottle a week, pretending that I just bought it, and that it cost at least $10 less than what it really cost. The problem is that my bottles-per-week purchasing rate is increasing, while his acceptance rate remains steady.
The question is not how to stop wine hoarding, but how many bottles can fit in my drawers before he notices? How many pairs of workout pants will I have to ditch in the meantime?
If he would just accept my wine hoarding ways, we could buy a wine rack like normal people…. or maybe two wine racks… One day we could convert my whole closet into a wine cellar. Then there would be nothing wrong with stacking crates next to my unmentionables.
I know that I’m not the only one with a hidden collection. Tell me fellow wine hoarders, where do you hide those extra purchases? How do you deal with a non-hoarding spouse or partner?

Are articles like this the reason newspapers are dying?
WTF is the purpose of this?
Isn’t even relevant enough to be posted on a person’s own blog.
Is someone getting paid to write this?
I concur; What’s happening in the world???
I started with a wine rack, went to a 40 bottle fridge, then another 40 bottle fridge, then boxes stacked up all over the house. My wife was very patient but it eventually reached a point where I had to get a storage unit. There is refridgerated wine storage at Store Fine Storage, where I store mine. (I am not affiliated with them)I have found that my wife is understanding as long as I share.
I cannot believe you collect a paycheck for wasting space with junk like this. Whats wrong, couldn’t you come up with something more important to write about?
THis is a waste of an article. Retarted.
hey kim, kpoche and wha? ,
it’s a waste to be a hater. just try and relate this article to something that makes you feel good (like slamming others articles).
i am pretty sure gwen didn’t force you or i to read this article and your rant would have been better served if something useful your post.
peace out
Because I state the obvious point, like Kim and Wha?, that this article lacks substance you called me a hater? True, no one forced me to read it. Unfortunately it was on the home page of the Palm Beach Post .. it looked as though it might be informative and worthwhile. I was wrong.
Oh, and for the record i do enjoy a good glass of wine – I just don’t feel the need to horde it like and alcoholiit is some form of contraband.

Clearly, you need to clasify those who have responded to this excellent fun article into two categories. Whiners and Winers. Those who think the article is a waste, have no appreciation for wine, and are simply whiners. All true wine connoisseurs, with a couple of extra dollars to spend, can and will relate to your situation. We are the true Winers. In the last 12 months I have purchased over 1,000 bottles of wine. Unfortunately 84 cases of wine don’t fit in my sock drawer. I blame all of this on the French. The bottles of Bordeaux are all yelling, “Take me home”. Remember, “A little wine is good for the soul”. It is great to be a Winer.
Opinions are like armpits, everyone has one, and they usually stink.
If you have ever collected anything, and have had said collection get out of hand, then you get the point of the article. I have done this with many things, from trading cards to wine. The article isnt about putting wine in the underwear drawer .. though how cool would it be to open your wives delicates drawer to pull out a nice bottle of vino?
For me, the article is trying to generate conversation about how do you feel about wine collecting? Do you buy wine simply to drink it, and but on demand? Or, do you buy your wine cases at a time, wondering where to put it, no less if you can physically consume it.
For myself, my tiny home cant support my desires to collect wine, no less drink it. I’ve got the 40 bottle wine cellar at home, but I have a storage unit at Imperial Wine Storage in West Palm Beach. I am actually going to be getting a 2nd storage unit there, since they plan on going 24/7 access, which most other wine storage places cant/wont do.
I have to admit I’ve done *EVERYTHING* I can to do keep the collectible wines down to a minimum. I only have 10 or 15 bottles of wine that I dont plan on drinking in the next year. And maybe only 5 bottles I dont plan to drink within the next 5 years. Of course, that number is increasing all the time.
Thanks for the post.
Oh, my God! I thought I was reading about myself! My husband does not drink wine, and has absolutely no idea how many bottles I have collected now!!! (over 200). I started off with just 6 bottles that I got in Bordeaux. Well, you can’t drink them, you have to store them and let them age properly, right? And then I started joining wine clubs, going to wine tastings and buying up everything I loved!! Most of it is too good to enjoy right now, so I save it…. and buy more!! It’s a vicious cycle, but one I thoroughly enjoy. I store them in cabinets and “long term storage” is under my bed!!! See you Friday at Crown!!! Must. have. more!!!!
Amy – you are too funny! I love the long term storage being under your bed! Why didn’t I think of that? I’ll be at the Crown tasting in North Palm Beach tomorrow evening – please come say hi if you are there!

While other people collect wines as a hobby, a lot of people have this attitude about not being able to let go of things they have had for years. As a result, they end up with stuff that add clutter to their space. Storing them is a good idea. You can get help here http://www.south75storage.com.
