For every large scale, mega-bottle wineries, there are thousands of other small production wineries that make their livelihood producing fine wine, just in smaller qualities. You probably haven’t heard of most of them. With small production, they can concentrate their efforts and many produce kickin’ wines. The problem lies in discovering these wineries. So there’s a good reason I was pretty excited for the wine tasting at Sabor Havana Conisseur Club on PGA Saturday night. It was a chance to try some wine I’d never heard of before.
Drew Feinberg poured seven wines, all but one from small-production California wineries, including the requisite Sauvignon Blanc, Chard and then flying straight into bolder reds. The remaining one is a California winemaker but the wine we tried was produced in Argentina.
Here were my favs:
2007 Justin Cabernet Sauvignon
This 100 percent Cab hails from Paso Robles. It had a great aroma of black cherries, raspberries and smoke. It was soft, velvety and had well-balanced tannins. I decided if it was a pair of shoes, it would be those knee-length black boots with a short heel. Sturdy, a little bit sexy, and intent on getting the job done. It retails for $27.99.
2006 Justin Isosceles
This beautiful Bordeaux style blend is made with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. I found the aromas of smoke and pepper overpowered the fruit aroma, but that also could have something to do with sitting near the entrance to Sabor Havana as the cigar smoke came out. Following the 100 percent Cab, this wine is much bigger, more tannic and more complex. There are layers of taste. I loved this wine, but with a $74.99 price tag it will probably never be coming home with me.
2005 Salvestrin Cabernet Sauvignon
Ah, my favorite of the evening. Of course, it took me a good five minutes to get around to tasting it because I was so enamored with the aroma. The smell was amazing! This is a great wine that will ask a lot of the drinker but will give a lot back. I suspect it will age very well – there’s a lot of potential in the wine and will probably be even better after being decanted. It retails for $60.
The prices quoted are for regular prices at Sabor Havana. If you are a wine club member, the prices are cheaper. Justin is also carried at Total Wine.
