If you’re like us Swirl Girls, and you love holidays of any sort, then it’s time to start kicking up your heels. Because there’s a brand new, uber-important holiday that you should add to your calendar: International #Cabernet Day.

That little pound sign before the Cabernet is a hashtag, a symbol Twitter-peeps (tweeps) use on Twitter to aggregate all their tweets about the same subject.

If you haven’t heard of #Cabernet Day yet don’t worry, because we celebrated the very first one yesterday. It’s simple, really. For 24 hours, people online around the world celebrated the king of grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon (though the door is open to cabernet blends and Cabernet Franc, the sexy cousin.) They drank the wine and then used social media to talk about it. Sites used were Facebook, Gowalla, Twitter, Foursquare and blogs.

Establishments around the world hosted meet-ups for like-minded Cab lovers to get together and toast their wine with friends. Wineries especially embraced this concept and if you were in California, you were probably a pretty happy wine lover.

A special thanks goes out to @RickBakas of @StSupery winery who hosted this event and organized everyone pretty much around the world.

Not wanting to miss the fun, the Swirl Girls gathered at Casa de Sweet to worship, I mean celebrate, our (my) most favorite grape. Since it was a school night and all, we turned it into a potluck dinner.

We had three beauties, all samples we received for free. We started with the Mount Veeder 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon. I made the mistake of not decanting it, as I’m sure it would have improved.

But I’ll let my tweets speak for themselves. Here’s what I tweeted Thursday night:

#Cabernet day starting out with Mount Veeder C.S. We should have decanted. Cocoa, cinnamon, chocolate. It’s like a starbucks in here. Plums.

Mount Veeder has great mouth texture. Dark fruits. Will be great in a few years. 2007 supposed to be epic for cellaring too.

I can see buying the Mount Veeder C.S. for weekly nice drinking. Pretty young yet, definitely a food friendly wine.

At this point in the night, all of our guests arrived and the fillet mignon’s were coming out of the oven, so I knew it was time for the Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection.

Just poured out @Caymus Cabernet Special Selection for #Cabernet. We can’t believe how dark it is. “It’s like velvet!” We are so happy.

Oh. My. God. @CaymusCabernet Special Selection is amazing. We’d like to swim in it. #Cabernet

Forget bathing. I would like to marry you, @CaymusCabernet Special Selection. And live happily ever after. #Cabernet Day.

It’s like drinking jewels. @CaymusCabernet Special-Selection. I’m so incredibly happy right now. Money can’t buy happiness but Caymus can.

“You guys are ruining our budget! Stop teaching us things about wine!” Winette @AllisonSRoss #CabernetDay @CaymusCabernet S-S

It’s the quietest dinner party I’ve ever had. Everyone is so into their food and wine right now. #CabernetDay

This @CaymusCabernet is so amazing. I’m just glowing. I’m so in love. #CabernetDay is the best thing to happen this week.

I’m so lucky to be enjoying a filet mignon with my @CaymusCabernet Special Selection. I’m so glad I eat meat again. #CabernetDay

The finish of the @CaymusCabernet Special Selection is like the world’s most handsome man writing you a poem.

But nothing good lasts forever and when we’d drunk the Special Selection dry, we sat for a minutes in silence, waited for the chocolate soufflés and moved onto the 2008 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon.

Sadly, the Special Selection @CaymusCabernet is dry. Moving onto the regular Cab. Which is downright delicious

.@CaymusCabernet has an awesome nose. How does @Caymus make wines with such a lovely, enticing nose? #Cabernet Day

What impresses me about the @CaymusCabernet regular C.S. is how nice it’s drinking now. And yet in two years I bet I’ll cry. #Cabernet Day

.@FrankLovesWine You have made our night spectacular. Thank you so much for the @CaymusCabernet for #CabernetDay

At the end of the night, we heard from Rick Bakas:

RickBakas @SwirlGirls #Cabernet day from this day forth will be the Thursday before Labor Day.

It was a lovely, lovely night filled with some amazing wines, delicious food and good friends. This final tweet sums it up:

#Cabernet Day rocks because I’ve got my 7 beloveds around me.

Caymus is available widely and their Cabernet Sauvignon sells for about $65/bottle. They will likely be getting the 2008 Special Selection in October for $100/bottle. The 2007 sells for $130/bottle online.

Count me in. I’m a Cabernet Gal from Manhattan. Love it slightly chilled but not necessary. CS and goat cheese and/or brie, with or without a french baguette. Love Cabernet’s from Australia but will drink anything put in front of me. Miss the wine sharing with my girlfriends up north. I’ve also had a pleasant experience with little penguin from Australia and a Missy Hair. I don’t believe you have to spend $65 a bottle to get a really fine tasting CS. My top price is about $30 down to $6.00. So please let me know where and when you are getting together. I live in Palm Beach so anywhere in the county works for me.One trip to Italy in the 1970′s totally converted me to red wine.Yum, Yum!

  3. Thanks for making the effort to make clear the terminlogy in this blog to the beginners!

About the Swirl Girls

JGwen (Dry)
What I drink: Old world reds, medium-bodied, dry, earthy. I've been into Spanish Riojas lately, but I recently tried a great Burgundy at a wine tasting in Lake Worth...

Lynn (Bold)
What I drink: I've been a red wine lady (is that like a red hat lady?) for years, though dry white wines woo me well.

Jennifer (Earthy)
What I drink: I prefer reds, although I can't deny the delight of a Riesling on a hot summer day.
