Take a trip back in time to Florida at the turn of the century with loads of entertainment and fun for the kids at Spady Living Heritage Day festival Saturday in Delray Beach. The expanded children’s area has pony rides, face painting, a bounce house, a petting zoo and traditional games including horseshoes, sack races, tug of war and three-legged races.

Don’t tell the kids, but they might actually learn something from the storytellers, including Butch “the Florida Cracker” Harrison, who will twist a tale or two. The Tradition Bearers of Renaissance Park from Marianna will demonstrate chores that were part of life on a farm: lye soap and broom making and other crafts that have been passed down through the generations using turn-of-the-century hand tools.

Entertainment includes dancing by the Delray Divas and Baby Divas, and the foot stompin’ line dancing of Virtuous Productions of Boca Raton. Music by the Strictly Business Band, the drummers of the Milagro Center, Bahamas 2 Miami Junkanoo Revue, DYMiN, Gospel Angels and the Jr. Drinkwater Blues Band.
A photographic exhibit, “Pahokee Prepares for War,” depicts what life was like in the 1940s in Pahokee, and marks the first time the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum has showcased an exhibit entirely devoted to slice of life in the Glades. The exhibit is on display through Sept. 30.

New this year is a painting demonstration by Highwaymen artist R. L. Lewis and a raffle of one of his original works, painted on-site, for $50 per ticket. Proceeds benefit the Spady’s Kids Cultural Club.
