Where to head for late-night pizza

Where to head for late-night pizza

When you’re traveling aboard the world’s largest cruise ship, there’s a lot of big stuff to take in. Like the 15 or eateries (I’m not sure whether to count the cupcake bakery as a real restaurant). Or the seven theaters and clubs.

But I’m getting excited about the little stuff. Like the touch-screen directional signs.

Seriously, the ship has these incredibly useful signs by the elevators that allow you to essentially interact with them and ask questions. What is the quickest way to my cabin? What restaurants are open right now? What is the meaning of life? (OK, they don’t answer that, but they do cover a lot of other ground.)

With that in mind, here are five more little things I like about the Oasis.

The day-of-the-week-reminders in the elevators: Step into any elevator on the Oasis and look to the floor. There’s a plaque that says, “Friday.” Or “Saturday.” Or “Sunday.” They look to be permanent fixtures, but there must be a way to swap them out each day. A fellow passenger told me that when you do a longish cruise – Oasis will offer seven-day itineraries – you tend to forget what day of the week is, so this must be a solution to remedy that.

The casino’s scrabble game: Sure, the casino has got plenty of slots and table games. But it’s also got a few quirky little machines I haven’t seen in my casino rounds throughout South Florida. There’s actually a scrabble game you can make money on – a little hard to describe, but let’s just say you want to hold on to any high-point-value letters (Qs and Zs) and if you manage to complete a seven-letter word, there’s a nice bonus in store.

The late-night pizza place: Most ships have their buffets that serve a midnight meal. But I like the pizza place – Sorrento’s – that stays open till 2 a.m. and serves slices of everything from pepperoni to Mexican-inspired pies. True, it’s not the greatest pizza, but when it’s 1:30 a.m. and you’re hungry, it will do.

The artwork on the walls: There’s lots of it – and some of it’s quite spectacular, with different themes in almost every setting aboard the ship. On my floor (11), there’s practically a museum-level exhibit of photographs from Antarctica.

The bartender who knows how to make my favorite drink: I have a lot of problems getting bartenders to make my favorite drink – a Negroni (equal parts gin, sweet vermouth and Campari). At the Oasis’ Schooner Bar, there was a guy who knew it instantly, replete with the proper garnish – an orange slice.
