Ricky Martin is no longer denying the rumors: He’s gay.
In a statement posted via Twitter in both Spanish and English, Martin said: “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.”
For many, Monday’s announcement will come as no surprise; the “Livin’ La Vida Loca” singer’s sexuality has been speculated about for years. But the Puerto Rican star, who got his start as a child in the teen group Menudo, never directly addressed it and was usually seen at events with beautiful women on his arm.
Martin, 38, said he decided to reveal the truth after working on his memoirs helped him realize that he had to be free with himself, and not keep any more secrets.
“From the moment I wrote the first phrase I was sure the book was the tool that was going to help me free myself from things I was carrying within me for a long time. Things that were too heavy for me to keep inside,” he said. “Writing this account of my life, I got very close to my truth. And this is something worth celebrating.”
Martin said one of the reasons why he kept his homosexuality hidden was because he was told by some that it would hurt his career. While his U.S. career peaked after the release of his 1999 self-titled English album, a multiplatinum success that included the hits “Livin’ La Vida Loca” and “Shake Your Bon-Bon,” he is still a hugely successful Latin artist. 
“Because all this advice came from people who I love dearly, I decided to move on with my life not sharing with the world my entire truth,” he said in his statement. “Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions.”
Martin, who is the father of two boys born via surrogate in 2008, said he couldn’t continue to hide his sexuality now that he is a father: “Enough is enough. This has to change.”
Martin’s book is still a work in progress.

Why am I not surprised? If he chooses to live as homosexual, it is his choice. I may not agree with the homosexual lifestyle or agenda, but they are human beings like me with feelings.

Why is this a big deal? He’s not the 1st gay person in the world. Shouldn’t we need to read about more pressing issues, like wars and healthcare?
Is funny because he wrote a book he found his truth, hey Ricky you didn’t find your truth when you were sleeping with other man? Or when you fell in love with a man? I’m gay and saying you’re gay to promote a book is pretty wrong, like you said you were living in silent, so you knew your truth many years ago.
I have to say that this announcement was about as shocking as Clay Aiken’s.

I give him credit. I’ll be 50 and am still not out. It’s comments like some on this board that force gay/lesbian individuals to remain in the closet. Why would I want to be ridiculed? Why would I want to be called a “fag”. Why would I want to be associated with “packing the fudge”. People are crude. It’s a fact of life. I’d rather just live my life the way I choose and the less people know about me, the better it is.

How can a gay raise kids? Kids learn for the sample of their parents, so we are creating a homosexual society? the society is losing the values. I respect the homosexual people but I do not accept, they can raise kids. Homosexuality is a mental problem or a case of sexual abuse.
to straight2 – Many of these gays are raising the very kids that the straights threw away, abused, walked away from, beat, hit, cursed etc…. In Florida they are good enough to be foster parents to these children but not good enough to adopt. Wake up and see whats going on outside your trailer park. Why is this news and why are some surprised? Someone even put here that he is a “role model”. Come on folks! He is a sucessful entertainer and probably a very nice person, but a role model? There are far too many people out there that are better role models and they are not even famous. By him coming out, all this means is that sales in his book will increase. Now if he donates all the money earned from the book to a relief fund or other charity, then he will have my vote for a role model.
Don’t beat yourself up Ricky. You are a gentle soul and we live in a world that is not accepting of certain people. Being gay is an aspect of your life and it is not your entire life. So, be proud of everything you are, a son, a father, a friend, etc. and move forward. We all cmoe out if and when we can depending on our individual life circumstances. A big hug for you.
