Paul Reubens‘ iconic character, Pee-wee Herman is heading back to the big screen with Judd Apatow set to produce and Reuben writing the screenplay.

“Let’s face it, the world needs more Pee-wee Herman,” Judd told Variety. “I am so excited to be working with Paul Reubens – who is an extraordinary and ground-breaking actor and writer. It’s so great to watch him return with such relevance.”

Judd revealed that he was inspired to become involved with the project after seeing Reubens’ sold-out live show in LA. The Pee-wee Herman Show is also headed to Broadway in October.

The character was first seen on the big screen in 1985’s Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.
