It is amazing to see a “Tomatometer” rating of 100 percent on any film, let alone a summer blockbuster. Usually, if a movie is in the 70-percent range on the review aggregator, it’s doing pretty well.
In this first installment of “Consensus” — which takes a look at what critics are saying about upcoming movies, and asks you to submit your own reviews and ideas — we’re going to see what the early reports say about what’s shaping up to be 2009’s first huge movie.
As The Onion News Network pointed to yesterday in their very funny fake newscast, J.J. Abrams’ version of Trek is a lot more fan-friendly than most science fiction movies. It’s extremely involving, full of action-packed sequences, but still character-driven.
For those who haven’t seen it yet (and where have you been), here’s the trailer:
Here are some of the folks who’ve weighed in so far:
• James Berardinelli, Reelviews, gives it three stars: “By re-branding the name, opening the Trek universe to millions of new viewers. J.J. Abrams’ attempt has mostly succeeded.”
• Bill Weber, Slant magazine, gives it 2 1/2 stars: “(Abrams has) wisely leavened the casual megadeath and space-battle effects with low comedy and numerous in-jokes on the ’60s series.”
• Bill Gibron of Pop Matters gives it a perfect score of 10: “Star Trek is destined to be remembered as one of 2009’s biggest and best surprises.”
As for other movies:
• Wolverine: X-Men Origins‘ 36-percent score at RT is more par for the course for your summer actioners — most critics don’t exactly enjoy the slam-bang action combined with threadbare or confusing plots: Emily Blunt writes: “Ultimately you’re left still asking, ‘What is Wolverine. And why?’ “
• I’ve heard terrible things about Matthew McConaughey’s latest romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and the RT score of 29 percent doesn’t begin to describe how some critics truly loathe this film. Ben Mankiewicz of At The Movies says, “This movie I think really did the impossible. It makes Failure To Launch look like The Thin Man.” Ouch.
• Beyonce’s catfightin’-mad flick Obsessed has an even lower score than Ghosts, 19 percent. Most folks were just kinda bored by the whole thing, and Beyonce is a target for barbs: “I hope Jay-Z doesn’t add me to his hit list for saying this, right below Chris Brown, but his wife can’t act worth a damn when she doesn’t get to sing,” says Richmond.com’s Mike Ward.
But what do you think? Give us your thoughts on these films and more.
Tomorrow, we’ll have more: Some lower-profile films that will appeal to those not interested in the loud actioners coming out right now…
