It is still worth the high price of the 3-D admission to see some of the amazing animation and design, but the writing is extremely boring and clumsy, and the performances cannot save it. Too many liberties were taken with the originals here, and in no way improve upon them, it only barely resembles either of Carroll's books in theme and some specific scenes. There are some "Disney moments" that literally set off a gag reflex as well.

See The Road with Viggo Mortensen if you can before it leaves theaters. You will not be disappointed. It's awesome! It's about a man and his son trying to survive in a postapocalyptic world. There is a similar film coming up with a mostly black cast, but I doubt it can match The Road.

You and me both, fellow Blockhead. The man led an incredible life -- a movie can only catch little bits and pieces, but I'm really hopeful about Andy Serkis playing him after seeing the trailer.

I am so excited to see a biopic of Ian Dury, he was one of the most influential of the early New Wave genre. He also had a bit part in one of the oddest movies of the 90s "The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover"
So place your hard-earned peanuts in my tin
And thank the Creator you're not in the state I'm in
So long have I been languished on the shelf
I must give all proceedings to myself

You make excellent points, John. Personally, I'd love to see some stronger films make their way into the public consciousness... and if a movie that hits these standards reaches our area, it'll definitely be mentioned. (I mean, seeing Red Cliff at the Mos'Art was definitely an experience. And my wife couldn't stop raving about Bright Star -- why it isn't getting nominated for awards, I'll never figure out.)

That’s because old people don’t go to the movies. They’re home flipping the channels looking for Matlock or JAG reruns.

And young people don't read movie reviews in newspapers.
Gotcha!

Maybe if we all took a principled stand not to plug crap, and feed it to our children and developing adults, then you might find an audience with a taste for something ... grown up and non crappy.

Just a thought.

Is there anybody on staff who digs up and reviews the good stuff, or is the Pulse section for the younger demographic?

It seems like the SoFla winter audience skews older, so if you can't dig out something of quality to write about, do you really think the people who watch the kinds of movies you highlighted above, are going to bother reading about the remakes and comic book stuff reviewed?

I think you'd be better giving mature readers some adult fare, because otherwise I think you're shorting your market. (Ask yourself: if I wasn't paid to review this, would I be reading about it in a ... newspaper? Even an online newspaper? The kids who pay to watch the kiddie stuff don't read, JT. )

John, I think there are good, mature movies made. They can be really hard to track down though. As with many culturally excellent items these days, you have to dig around.

It's true. The movies they make nowadays are for the kids, nothing for mature audiences.
