LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tales of science fiction, fantasy and the future dominate contenders for the Academy Award in makeup.

The seven finalists announced Monday for the makeup Oscar include the sci-fi tales “Star Trek” and “District 9,” the fantasy comedy “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” the apocalypse drama “The Road” and the fantasy “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” the final film of the late Heath Ledger.

The other finalists are the British royalty saga “The Young Victoria” and the Italian political drama “Il Divo.”

Members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences makeup branch will view 10-minute excerpts from each film and select three nominees, which will be announced with other Oscar nominations Feb. 2.
