Best Television Series, Drama

‘Big Love’

‘Dexter’

‘House’

‘Mad Men’

‘True Blood’

Will win: “Mad Men”

What a solid list of nominees this year! Except for “House,” which has seen better days but had a few gut-punch moments last year (R.I.P., Dr. Kutner!) Even though “Dexter” and “True Love” got their lion’s share of critical ink this year, I think that the ’60s-era dealings of the intriguingly disturbed Don Draper, his colleagues and family still get the voting edge.

Best Televison Series, Comedy or Musical

’30 Rock’

‘Entourage’

‘Glee’

‘Modern Family’

‘The Office’

Will win: “Glee”

My heart says that ‘Modern Family,” perhaps the best family sitcom since the more arch and twisted “Arrested Development,” deserves to snag that bright, shiny trophy for its sharp take on the people that make you craziest and happiest, whether you want them to or not. But my head, and the part of my gut that loves singing “Don’t Stop Believin’” in harmony, knows that the cheery, nutty chorale crew of “Glee” have this thing already locked up and in the case next to their trophy from Sectionals.

Best Actor in a Television Series, Drama

Simon Baker

‘The Mentalist’

Michael C. Hall

‘Dexter’

Jon Hamm

‘Mad Men’

Hugh Laurie

‘House’

Bill Paxton

‘Big Love’

Will win: Jon Hamm

This category is starting to look a little familiar, with three of the guys here (Hamm, Laurie and Hall) repeating from last year. The other two (Baker’s smug investigator with a tragic past and Paxton’s conflicted polygamist home improvement/casino mogul) are strong, worthy contenders. Baker’s got a shot, and “Dexter” had such a shocking end that I’m tempted to say Hall does to. But last year’s winner, “In Treatment”‘s Gabriel Byrne, isn’t in play, and Hamm had an even better year on “Mad Men” than last year, so I’m going with him.

Best Actress in a Television Series, Drama

Julianna Margulies

‘The Good Wife’

Glenn Close

‘Damages’

January Jones

‘Mad Men’

Anna Paquin

‘True Blood’

Kyra Sedgwick

‘The Closer’

Will win: Julianna Margulies

I gotta be honest – it was hard to tell how good this show was going to be from the previews, and how righteous and vulnerable the former Nurse Hathaway was going to be as a political wife done wrong, doing better on her own. But it – and she – are fabulous, and even with Paquin, of the ultra-hot “True Blood” in competition, my money, if I had any, would be on Julianna.

Best Actor in a Television Series, Comedy or Musical

Alec Baldwin

’30 Rock’

Steve Carell

‘The Office’

Thomas Jane

‘Hung’

David Duchovny

‘Californication’

Matthew Morrison

‘Glee’

Will win: Matthew Morrison

Talented actor, hot, spontaneous show tune-inspiring show. Don’t fight it. It’s gonna happen.

Best Actress in a Television Series, Comedy or Musical

Toni Collette

‘United States of Tara’

Courteney Cox

‘Cougar Town’

Tina Fey

’30 Rock’

Edie Falco

‘Nurse Jackie’

Lea Michele

‘Glee’

Will win: Lea Michele

See “Best Actor.” Break into jazz hands.

Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television

‘Grey Gardens’

‘Into the Storm’

‘Little Dorrit’

‘Taking Chance’

‘Georgia O’Keeffe’

Will win: “Grey Gardens”

I actually have a soft spot for “Taking Chance,” which I cried all the way through, but “Grey Gardens” has such an impressive pedigree as a documentary, Broadway play and now luminous TV movie with two movie stars (Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange), it can’t lose.

Best Actor in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television

Kevin Bacon

‘Taking Chance’

Kenneth Branagh

‘Wallander: One Step Behind’

Chiwetel Ejiofor

‘Endgame’

Brendan Gleeson

‘Into the Storm’

Jeremy Irons

‘Georgia O’Keeffe’

Will win: Kevin Bacon

OK, so I’m gonna start crying again. What was most amazing about Bacon’s performance as a Marine escorting the body of a young man killed in Iraq wasn’t what he said, but what he didn’t. It’s a masterwork of stoicism, restraint and dignity framed in duty and grief. I was moved by it like nothing I saw last year. Hope it wins.

Best Actress in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television

Joan Allen

‘Georgia O’Keeffe’

Drew Barrymore

‘Grey Gardens’

Jessica Lange

‘Grey Gardens’

Anna Paquin

‘The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler’

Sigourney Weaver

‘Prayers for Bobby’

Will win: Jessica Lange

It’s honestly a toss-up between her and Drew Barrymore, but I’m gonna go with experience on this one.

Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television

Neil Patrick Harris

‘How I Met Your Mother’

Michael Emerson

‘Lost’

Jeremy Piven

‘Entourage’

William Hurt

‘Damages’

John Lithgow

‘Dexter’

Will win: Neil Patrick Harris

NPH can not be denied, people. He’s singing, he’s dancing, he’s hosting award shows. As he sang on his show’s 100th episode, nothing suits him like a suit. And an award.

Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television

Jane Adams

‘Hung’

Rose Byrne

‘Damages’

Jane Lynch

‘Glee’

Janet McTeer

‘Into the Storm’

Chloe Sevigny

‘Big Love’

Will win: Jane Lynch

Not only is she part of the “Glee” juggernaut, but Lynch is the bitter, mean-spirited, track suited quip-o-meter that keeps that show from becoming a very special production of “Free To Be You And Me.”

One Response to “Golden Globes picks, Pt 2: Television!”

  1. I noticed something as well about this on another blog site.Incredibly, your view on it is diametrically opposite to what I read previously. I’m still trying to figure out over the conflicting points of view, but I’m tipped strongly toward your point of view. And regardless, that’s what is so terrific about contemporary democracy and the marketplace of ideas on-line.
