John Cusack tries to outrun the end of the world in '2012'.

The “apocalypse movie” has become so prevalent, it seems to be its own genre now.

With 2012 taking over the top spot at the box office, this style of movie has become a sure-fire money-maker. The director of 2012, Roland Emmerich, seems to have made the end of the world his cottage industry, having also made the alien-invasion blockbuster Independence Day and the global-warming doomsayer The Day After Tomorrow.
