Broken Lizard, the five-guy filmmaking comedy group best known for Super Troopers, Beerfest, and Club Dread performed live at the Palm Beach Improv on Jan. 22-23. While these guys are known to have knee-slappingly funny-movies, their stand up show only got a few giggles.

Broken Lizard formed at Colgate University as a student sketch group. After graduating, moving to New York, and performing in a few stand-up shows, the five guys went on to movie making. Their films resemble traditional fraternity-style films such as Animal House, Porky’s, and Revenge of the Nerds.

Now, the group of five guys has returned to the world to stand-up, embarking on a nationwide tour. But after the show they gave at the Improv this past weekend, their return to their stand-up roots gives off doubt.

The show started off well, when the boys walked onto the stage with their Super Troopers cop outfits on. Jokes from their films were told and sketches were performed, but as time went on the laughter in the room seemed to get dim. The sketches were a little hard to understand and the jokes were a little old.

At one point of the show, each of the five guys got some alone time on the stage, allowing each one to perform their own stand-up show. But even though each guy had their own opportunity to perform alone, each one of their performances seemed the same. The overall gist of all of the jokes consisted of relationships, college stories, relationships, drunken tales, relationships, and relationships.

Broken Lizard is a very funny group of five guys, but only when it comes to their filmmaking. These guys should leave their stand-up past in the past and keep up with their true talent of creating hit movies such as Super Troopers.
